They were originallly developed BY Ford in conjunction with Yamaha in the mid 90's. at this stage they are pretty different to what they were originally anyways, so i'd give most of the credit to ford and Mazda for the current engines state of tune. Thats right, the duratec 1.6 and the MZR 4 in the mazda 2 are closely related..

Nope, the Duratec 1.6l in the Fiesta is an all alloy Ford/Yamaha/Mazda engine with belt driven cams, used by Mazda under the MZI designation, available in the UK Fiestas from 1.25 to 1.6 litres. (was 1.7 litres in the Puma)
The Duratec 2.0 l engine in the Focus and the new XR4 is an all alloy Ford/Mazda engine with chain driven cams, used by Mazda under the MZR designation. Available in the UK Fords from 1.8 to 2.0 litres (2.3 l in the new mondeo) and in Mazdas from 1.35 to 2.3 litres.
Duratec is simply a name to make all the engines sound Durable and high Tech
