If you drive into a wall or another vehicle exactly the same as yours directly head on, then the forces are working on your vehicle across a much greater area than what would occur if you crashed into a tree or power pole.

True, I was just considering the tree as a REALLY big one...
The smaller contact area of a pole or tree would be far more devastating to the vehicle.
