To be fair the 4.6L wasn't a bad unit, it had higher differential ratios which somewhat made up for the lack of TQ against the 4.5TTD. The 4.6 was introduced because the old 4.5 petrol and for that mater the 5.7 were no longer emissions compliant.
Having said that, diesels as generally more fuel efficient, better suited for long distances, towing, outback touring and not to mention petrol is banned in some remote communities.
My 200 series on a single tank of diesel can get near to 1400km on the highway, conversely it can cross The Simpson Desert on a full tank of diesel. Will be interesting to see how the new hybrid stacks up against these figures (presuming it is hybrid). IMO without a diesel engine any new Land Cruiser will be a dud here in OZ.
