Being a country kid, I learned to drive a car, as opposed to a tractor, at about 12 years old.
I would go out with Dad on jobs with his FC ute and drive that on the pretty crappy dirt roads. Those days any speed above 50mph was getting too fast on the corrugated and slippery gravel, so no speed demon antics.
My most terrifying drive was on a wet black soil road which had a high crown and waterlogged table drain. He instructed me to keep it on the high point, with constant corrections, because if we slid into the table drain, it would be somewhat inconvenient. Passed that test with white knuckles.
99% of today's learners don't get that experience of car control. And I wonder about the professional instructors who advocate sitting close to the steering wheel and shuffling the wheel around corners.
Being able to get from A to B without hitting any surrounds seems to be a major achivement.
