Default Woeful fuel consumption... 17L/100Km

Just recently I measured the fuel consumption in my AUII Falcon, and got 16.7L/100Km, which was quite surprising. I had felt as though it had been using a bit too much fuel but this confirmed it.

Granted it was all in the city but 80% of the time it was kept uner 2,000 revs and was in economy mode all the time.

The air filter is 2 months old, tyre pressures are fine. What could it be, got me a bit bamboozled..

Surely without altering my driving style, it should be capable of 12 or 13L/100Km's??

Cheers guys.

I get about 400-500kms per tank which I assume is 80L+ so your fuel consumption for city driving sounds about right.

AU2 6 cyl auto?

80% city driving would yield pretty terrible fuel consumption.

That consumption sounds about right to me. I used to work in the city, and every Falcon I had was around that figure with that sorta driving.

68L for an AU. Consumption sounds about right too.

Yep, that's pretty spot on.
If you're marching up a hill 'only' at 2000rpm in a 4L, its going to drink the fuel like a Boeing on takeoff.
Turn your aircon off, that's good for a litre or so.

Well considering the redbook figures are around 12 or 13 (Should be official) i would of thought it to be abnormal?

Maybe so, but thats when your car was new, its now 8 years old with a lot more K's on it with all the engine parts that have worn/clogged/fouled etc etc.

mate it sounds about right the 4ltrs dont like being on idle to much, there more of a highway car, than a start stop city car.

I have a EF XR6 and i get 16L per 100kms and AU are a little lighter so theoretically should get better economy.

Maybe you should give ur car a full service and use good oils???

Gday mate. How long has your oxygen sensor been in the car for? A dud oxy sensor will increase fuel consumption. If the oxy sensor has been in the car for more than 100000k I would look at replacing it.

Subscribed out of interest.

FWIW I am getting about 15.8L/100KM 100% city driving in my ED - if AUs aren't good for much better then I may as well stick with what I've got lol.

an AU is quite possibly superior to your ED in every way, i've owned both.
The fact of the matter is they are both ~1.5tonne cars with essentially the same 4.0L straigh six - no great economy improvements.

To the OP:
Oil, Oil Filter, Air filter, Fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug leads, o2 sensor, clean your throttle body, change fuel brands/types, adjust driving style, put tyres on 38psi, do a reset, perhaps a bottle of injector cleaner, if you don't see results after all of that, then it's normal.

The figure seems high to me, I had an AU2 XR8 200kw that could hit that economy with 100% city driving. Current ride is an AU1 V8 Ghia that sits around 5-550km per tank city and easily over 700km open road. So i'm looking around 12.5 (this is also what the computer average sits on as well as me working it out) and consistently can hit just under 9lt/100km open road cruise (loaded with family and boot full). I've had 5 AU's - AU1 Futura (6,auto), AU1 XR8 (auto), AU2 XR8 (auto), AU1 Ghia (VCT 6, auto) and the current v8 ghia. All did way better than your figures, I would have said far from normal figures.

my cars actually been sitting on similar consumption, cant seem to get it under 17L/100km and its not just the DTE and functions playing up because i have to put in petrol ALL the time
i had the auto serviced last week and tomorrow the plugs and leads are getting changed, as well as the whole car getting tuned... if thats not it then it must be the 02 sensor or something because these figures are far from normal, ive gotten 550kms a tank consistently just driving around town with the odd planting of the foot, filled up today and not surprisingly its showing about 370km DTE, bloody hell ive heard of boss 290s and 315s getting similar/better economy! surely this is not right

My latest tank just yielded 16.3l/100km in mixed city/highway driving. Oh, and that's on LPG!

Filled up the wagon with LPG last night.

Got 16.5l/100km, 75% city 25% Hwy. A few trips to Canberra saw us get sub 13l/100. 12.8 IIRC.

Does this figure week in week out. Love it.

The SR will do similar with the same mix of driving, but going to work it's about 14.5l/100km as most of the driving is country.

Gotta love LPG.

Now, just have to convince the Mrs that an AU S2 220 manual is worth buying and putting on LPG! :evil_laug

Well i've got an S1 monty (VCT donk) and I've been returning around 15L with a mix of mostly city driving and some highway driving.

If I get 400k's out of a tank im happy

WEIRD.... went for a highway drive today to drop my car off at the mechanics and i got 7L/100km.... 7!!! I reset the thingy as soon as I got on the highway. The 15 minute drive around town to get to the highway got me about 17-18L/100km

My AU2 6VCT gets about 14.5. That's about 90% city and 10% highway. On highway alone it averages about 8.

Could I have some more information on the o2 sensor?

Haven't owned the car for 100,000 k's so i dont know of its state, but i might change it for the sake of it.

It is a user replaceable part, where is it located (air intake?) and how much $$?
