Default Stealth Car Antenna

Hey All,

Well I got completely bloody sick of my antenna going up and down all the bloody time, well actually the lack there of.

So I ordered a stealth car antenna, it looks like it hooks up to the rear window heater, or parcel shelf (basically anything metal).

Ill post u some pics of the unit once it is installed, and what the reception is like with it.

Cheers

I've had one of them for a while, through the rear demister. Reception is not to bad. Mine only struggles where the old antenna used to struggle as well.
Only odd thing is a noise through the radio when the rear demister is on, but it's not to much of a worry.

Cheers

Electric aerials are a joke. The theory is that they go down so people can't snap them off whilst you've got the car parked etc. You're 590247 times more likey to snap off your electric aerial on some low-lying branch. On the cabs we used to disconnect the electric aerial on the futuras and just put them up two parts, obviously the thickest two parts. Thats how everyone should have their aerial imo.

I'd suggest if you are going to snap one off on a branch you might be just a tad too close to the kerb and the aerial is the least of your worries. But then again if you're referring only to taxi drivers I guess you only have to look at most cabs around to see how much they care about their panels/wheels etc. I think the electric aerial is one of the best inventions ever for a car and esp with the half-high setting.

yeah should be interesting to see what it is like, i have heard that people from the US are wiring them to the parcel shelf instead of the demister.

My issue with my aerial is my garage door. I have a very low door height and have to remember to turn my radio off to avoid bending the aerial.

A rear window alternative is a good idea depending on what it looks like.

LOL Shav, that must be bloody low!! Just scrapes over the car roof eh???

Are you able to stand up straight and walk underneath the door? Or do you have to bend over?

I gave up on the power option and went for a simple Black flex aerial. Easy to 'unscrew' for car washs, its short so it doesn't hit anything. UK

I'll be getting something like this when I do my stereo. Sits hidden under the rear-view mirror and sits along the windscreen. That way don't have to worry how bad it looks even when I'm driving.

Shark Fin would be a lot of effort I reckon Shav, trying to run wiring through the headliner and everything if you want it hidden.

To the OP - did you fill in the hole where the old aerial used to be? I'd love to shave mine so there's no trace of it ever being there and get a more stealthy one. I hardly ever listen to the radio anyway, and when I do its usually AM stations!

IIRC the shark fin type aerial on euro cars are the recievers for the GPS units as well so i imagine it would be a costly unit..
Look fast just sitting there though...

you should just fit a Ham radio in ya car then Rik. No point having an FM stereo for your minor usage. LOL

I don't have this issue as mine doesnt go up or down. THe engine on it works like you can hear it trying to go up or down but it just doesnt move (think it's bent inside). I considered completly removing it and filling in the gap and having it painted so it looked as though it never was there.

Its not a bad option Nathan, I too like that look. But if you want reception for the radio, you'd have to relocate another aerial in a different location.

perhaps a window aerial? It is ugly though

What's wrong with under the bonnet? LOL or maybe fit one like the BA has in the front window pillar?

I should of has this done when I had the car fixed but I didn't think about it at the time.

Im sure it could fit under the bonnet. But I think the idea of it is to fit it as high on the car as possible. Could be a cheaper alternative for a hidden antenna

I've got a little antenna similar to that one sitting on the passenger side of my dash near the a-pillar for my head unit's GPS feature. Works DAMN well, picks up reception quicker than any portable unit I've seen!

And yeah Nathan, when I was toying with the idea of a hidden antenna for my radio I wanted to bog the standard one's hole and paint over it, essentially just have it shaved off so you couldn't tell it was there.

Maybe we should all get roof mounted satellite dishes :P
