You would need to hand over payment, and then complete the relevant forms for your state.
E.g. in Victoria, the car will need to have a RWC (Road Worthy Certificate) to enable the registration to be transferred into your name. A RWC can be obtained from a licenced tester, who ensures the car is up to standard. Many sellers provide this when selling a car privately. Once you have the RWC and the transfer form, which has to be completed by yourself and the previous owner, you need to visit a VicRoads office to process the transfer. Keep in mind you have to pay a stamp duty fee, which would probably be around $5-600 for you with that particular car. You then need to insure the car before you drive it, with a minimum of Third Party Property Damage insurance (protection against damage you cause to another person's car or property). If you want to cover your own car too, you can take out comprehensive insurance. |

Can't stress the insurance enough. If you know the particulars of the car arrange a cover note prior to collection, or arrange a quote with the basic info, then call from the place you are buying it from and finish the transaction before getting in the car to drive home.

Hi Mate
I take it you living in NP VIC Negotiate the RWC with purchase Since this is your first car take a mechanic with you to have looked at the car You can also have RACV check your car for like $150 apprx vicroads website as info regarding rego and stamp duty cost Calculator http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/ Here you can also check if the current owner has the car on finance - check vechile details before purchase. Don't buy car until finance has been cleared. I'm not sure of general wear and tear on Fairmonts but im sure other members here will shed light on that. Its great car your buying good luck and lets us know how you go. ++ For Insurance I currently have lots of trouble getting insurance on my F6 due to age and car being "performance vechile". I dont drive it as much as i would like to.

Hey guys. Im going to look at the car tonight hopefully everything goes well.. Ive read that i should look at Power Steering, Brakes, Transmission and any noises from the diff... were the main problems people had Oh and them dodgy handbrakes lol.
Im buying the car privately it has 130,000Kms on the clock I think thats ok for a 2002 model. Plus is that it comes with RWC + REGO. So its just stamp duty and insurance ive gotta pay. I dont really know anyone thats a mechanic but i know a bit about cars and some tell tale signs with the engine... I might get an racv check but ill have to organise that another time. If anyones got any advice id greatly appreciate it would be great!

pretty simple
1. find car 2. inspect it yourself 3. if you like it, get an independant mechanic/racv to check it over 4. if the report is ok, argue on price 5. agree to buy, sign paperwork 6. take paperwork to rta/dot and then you've got yourself a new cool car and a whole wad of cash missing
