Just as i was pulling into work, he asked me to pop the bonnet, then went on to tell me that Breather pods coming out of my rocker cover are illegal, saying the engine isnt allowed to breath directly into the atmosphere?
Then went on to tell me that the tires i had on (BFGoodrich Radial T/A's) arent allowed to be used on my ute due to load ratings, and then when he checked the sticker to have a look, he looked puzzled and just told me to take it to bob jane and get them to see if they are alright :S Since this is the first time i've had police try and defect my car, i was wondering if what he said is right? I know that my XC being made in 1977 has a lot more leniance to regulations such as emissions ect

As for tyres, you will need to check the tyre placard, and compare with what tyres are fitted. If he didn't defect you for them, don't worry. If you start carrying a lot of weight, then worry. |

As above a lot of traffic coppers are into modified cars and/or just cars in general and know their stuff.

White wall lettering is a "come fine me" magnet to coppers.
when I was younger we used to conceal the white lettering (turned inwards) and run our cars as sleepers so as to avoid the cops, seems like Gen Y and Z don't know the rules.. |

tyres had white lettering back then but mostly all 14" and 15" rim stuff. Constant battles with XC and 5.8, anything with a cam was suspected of not complying with emissions, you had to have crankcase ventilation all hooked up so no pancake air filters, evaporative emissions and charcoal canister had to be ther and hooked up. God help you if the Thermoquad carby and EGR was replaced by a Holley. Oh, not allowed to lower the front suspension by any more than 50mm otherwise you might have clearance problems or get some bump steer... Most guys used to use an XY width 9" diff in the back of the hard tops so they could get 10" rims in there but the cops were wise and if you didn't meed track that was a defect. Sorry for the trip down memory lane and some of you other seniors out there know this song all too well.... |

Not sure about QLD but an XC ute in NSW are classed as a commercial vehicle and required to have 8 ply rated tyres. It should have a tyre plaque on the inside of the drivers door showing the size and rating of the tyre that should be fitted.

Breather on XC needs to recirculate into the air cleaner assembly so that oil fumes are extracted and burnt off, standard PCV system, your engine will thank you for it anyway.
Tyres need to comply to load rating of vehicle, and this is vehicle specific, does not matter if you decide to carry stuff in the back or not. |

So it doesnt make 2/5ths of fa difference to crankcase ventilation, only to emissions.

Cheers guys
Was just curious about it. He wasn't a complete A-hole about it and was pretty good with giving me some time to fix it all up. And for everyone who asked im in mid queensland coast, Hervey Bay. And my car looks and sounds nothing like stock It has a lumpy cam sound (I doubt the old owners before me put a cam in, but if you heard it you'd swear it had one)

He probably just wanted to check your ute out Willo and after he satisfied his curiosity he let you go. The key is if they pull you over be nice as pie and don't fail the attitude test, you'll get off more often than not.

I would have thought that in today's world, the old classics on the road are far a few between and we've grown up now with families and behave responsibly... why would the cops even bother with so many "new" young idiots around...
We're not the enemy anymore...
