Exclamation SA Police starts crushing cars :(

SA POLICE have this morning crushed six cars seized by the courts from hoon drivers.

One of the six cars crushed is an EF/EL XR8.

Hopefully the former owners learnt their lesson.

To be honest though, *if* the cars were roadworthy they should have been auctioned off with the proceeds going to some local charity or other.

Well i know ill get flammed saying this.... I have gotten 1 ticket in my 7yrs of driving.

"IF" i was on my 3rd strike and i got caught doing a stupid speed in my T3 i tell you now i wouldn't be slowing down and letting the cops take my car. I don't like the crushed car method, IMO it would make people question themselfs if they should stop or speed up on the 3rd strike

Not sure such a smart move to risk your life and that of others so as to not lose your car to the police, its surely not worth that.....

that`s a good point, someone with nothing to lose, who knows he`s gonna cop it for speeding or might be on the alcohol limit might go for broke.

Too true.
How many people get chased by cops only to wreck and die/kill someone else. Are we likely to see more of these types of accidents because the perpetrator is afraid of their car being crushed?
I'd say definately.

You might save them the trouble of crushing it if you do it yourself!

Why don't they just take it and give it to the local TAFE college, or a wreckers. Atleast then it would be useful to someone.

Ok, time to reply.

I aint a hoon/speeder and i would never let myself be put in a postion of a 3rd strike. But what gives the goverment the right to crush someones 10k, 30k(my car) or someones 150k(M3 or GTR) that they spent there hard earn cash. And all its for is too prove a point, a pretty poor attitude by the goverment IMO.
I have thought about this topic many times and on alot of occasions on "what would i do" if i was in this situation. Im a 25 year old male, and lets be realistic, a good chance most 18-30year olds think they are untouchable on the roads and will back there own driving in this situation. Even though its a good chance the police have had driver training course.

To back up what you are saying ..... If someone is stupid enough to be up for their 3rd strike for being stupid, there is a good chance they are stupid enough to try and do a runner instead of handing over their car ......

If it is a $150,000 car ...... big fine compared to other things that happen in the world that could be regarded as a tad more serious. Whats the fine for 3rd time drink driving?

Why dont people read the link...

Quote:
The vehicles went under the mechanical press at 9.30am at the SA Police Southern Impound at Christies Rd, Lonsdale.

Police crushed two confiscated cars late last year - both valued at less than $1000 - but have auctioned or sold many other more valuable vehicles since the so-called anti-hoon laws were passed in Parliament.

Money from the sale of seized vehicles goes to the Victim's of Crime fund.

In December 2009 the Government gave police the power to apply for court permission to crush cars.

Less than 2 per cent of cars confiscated under the laws have been crushed.

The laws authorise the Police Commissioner to call for the crushing, rather than sale, of a car forfeited by the court.

Isn't that the same thing? The driver still losers the value of the car. A hefty fine for a driver if it was a 150k car, or ever average joes 30k car.

I agree with taking the car off the idiots, but crushing I don't agree with.

Wreck them out and once all the useful parts are sold off (proceeds to victims of crime), then scrap the shell (with proceeds once again, going to victims of crime)

As for value of these cars. Everyone knows that insurance companies and car yards etc etc undervalue cars. So don't believe what you read there.

To be honest I have no problem with the government disarming a repeat offender of a lethal weapon when he has been using it in a way that puts other peoples' safety at risk. Couldn't give a toss what he spent on it. If he didn't want it crushed, he should've pulled his head in.

When they crush a car worth more than 5 grand, or something better than the xr6 or vl wagon. That is when people will take notice.
