Sorry if this has been posted before (not been here for a while).
Whats considered high millage for a six cylinder engine? Freinds thinking of buying a Six cylinder BA Fairlane. Car 1 has 230,000 on the clock for $6000 (been talked down from $7500) Car 2 has 165,000 on the clock for $8500 (been talked down from ($9000) Is 65,000ks worth $2500? There are other factors such as car 2 is in better condition and has a tow hitch which he wants. Car 1 nicer colour and better interior. Any thoughts/comments appriciated. Thanks. |

*dont forget service history!!!
*how many previous owners? *sometime big km car on freeway is better than a "half the KM" city car. |

Good point
Car with lower ks is one 'country' owner. Dont know about the other car. Do know the dealers wife has been driving it for the last 3 years and it has trolly dings and scratches. |

so many factors affect the longevity. I'd take a car with 250, 000 freeway km on it before i'd look at one that had 90,000 city or short run km on it.
but I think 230,000 is getting high for a private vehicle. |

One way to look is that $2500 could get a rebuild on the high ks car. Forget resale value. If you get a Fairlane, you accept it will be worth bugger all when you sell it anyway.
Saying that, the trolly dings would upset me personally, so I would probably go for the Lower Ks car even though It has the cream leather and the other car has the much nicer (in my opinion) black leather. |

Some on the Forums I know will say that ONLY low K cars are the way to go but I have found that good serviced country cars seem to be great value. Most things would be fixed, bugs ironed out and if the car looks to be well cared for and the interior in good shape can be a better proposition than a shopping cart that does 20k's per week to the school, shops and local footy ground.

Don't forget that 'country car' could also mean Bush, with lots of rough dirt roads.
Take it for a drive and see how tight the suspension feels.

Been passing this thread onto my freind.
Desission made. $8500 BA Fairlane Ghia with 165,000ks is going to be the one he gets. $6000 is very cheap for a BA lane but the high ks, no history and the dings and scratches are the killer. Thanks for the help, much appriciated. On a personal note the $6000 car was the same colour as my Fairlane so Im happy hes not getting it, and going for a silver one. |

Mine is a country car, BA MKII XT, 292000km on it. As long as it has been serviced it will be fine.
Id take the one you are happiest with, and not consider km, but moreso a service history, and how you think it drives. If the high k one drives better than the low k one, youll know, make your decision based on that.

hmmmmm.
I think you should always look at the average price of a particular model, be prepared to pay that price but get the best condition car possible. Not sure if buying the cheapest around is a good strategy, but depends on the intended use. For instance, some People on here say you can get a BA XR8 for $11-14k. I have a mate who bought one. He came over to show me in an effort to demonstrate its no different to mine. With his 187,000km (an extra 120,000km over mine), dings all over the shop, roughed up interior, 2 years older, missing foglight, no leather, no climate, no premium sound, rough looking paint, scuffed rims. But he was over the moon about it. I had to look away not to smirk. I wouldnt have paid $7000 for his or even swap for my DL LTD (also mint), but i told him he snapped up a good buy. Mine is mint condition, sparkling from every angle, all options fitted, newer, lower km. But he thinks I paid too much when compared to him. In comparison I think I got the bargain. Service and general condition . If some one keeps their car serviced and in good knick generally it is a loved car . I have an EF with 334,000 k's that makes most 150,000 k cars look pretty bloody ordinary . Engine oil and filter is changed every 5000 K, trans , diff , cooling system and brakes are drained and refilled every 12 months . Trans serviced every 2 years .Car has not had the head off or the transmissiin rebuilt and does not look like needing either for a bloody long time to come . I will be mighty ****ed off if I dont get 500,000 k's out of it before needing any major work . It drives like the day it was bought .

car garaged all it`s life, ........ full service history included,.......low k`s..... RWC certificate supplied, immaculate condition,
these are the words i like when looking for a second hand car these days, you still have to look carefully, but it makes the job easier to find a good limo i think. have a look at this add my young brother sent me(toyota dude) http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/lexus-ls400-1993-11585609?vertical=Car&cr=5&eapi=2&__N=1216%201246% 201247%201252%201282%204294965468%204294965404%209 03&distance=25&silo=Stock&Range=Price:Min,Max~1|Mi leage:Min,Max|Year:Min,Max|Seats:Min,Max|EngineSiz e:Min,Max&sort=default to me this is a gold add, car appears to be in nice condition and not tampered with, good history, i would pay extra for this car over an identical cheaper one without these features. |
