Default Brocky's skyline now Dick Smith skyline?

http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegr...ent_signified/

V8SA needs a kick up the backside if they have replaced Brocky's skyline with a sponsor.

I really hope it's not true, but sadly a motor racing legend is easily outdone by a corporate logo in todays day and age..

It’s all about the $$$$$

As said and done every one who knows the race will know its Brock's fathers will tell their sons about the legend that was and with all great legends they will get greater in time.

I haven’t watched V8SCs with any sort of regularity in a long time I actually find it very vanilla now, but I always watch the big race I did it from the time I was 7 with my dad and I’ve been doing it with my son since about the same time, and in the next year or 2 well probably make the trip out there again for the day just like my dad did with me.

this is a race that is bigger than the $$$$ it’s had many people try to change it some have some haven’t but the wheel keeps on turning and the race keeps going as Australia’s premier motor racing event

So I wouldn’t worry too much about some stooge selling the name, the actual name will live on with the people that care regardless off the people in the corner office counting the advertising $$$$

My buddy went to skyline for the Brock memorial when it all happened, it was moving, and he, like most people signed the wall. Then they painted most of it with sponsors.

he was really upset, to him, its like knocking over someones headstone

No respect for the great man that raced a FORD sierra !!!

they painted over it because morons were slowing down and even stopping to look at the writings. it is a very thin public road - if people wanted to pay respects they could park on the mountain and walk down to skyline, but that would be too hard. even then, a local driving along the road to get home doesn't want to come over a blind corner to see a bunch of people standing on the road

plus, maybe the locals who don't care about racing but endure it for 4 times a year don't want bogans from all over the country coming over to have a look

These are both true but it was named in memory of Peter Brock after his passing, so what we dont remember him any more?

People need to get their hands off it. That part of the circuit was just called Skyline for many decades. It was only in recent years that it was changed from Skyline to Brock's Skyline. As far as I am concerned the name is still Skyline and any reference to the late Peter Brock is just pandering to populism.

1) It's just a bit of bitumen. Why get so upset over it?

2) Why do you need a piece of bitumen to be named after Brocky to remember him?

3) It's always just been called skyline.

I couldn't care less what they call it, it's still Skyline. If people need a piece of track named after someone to "remember them by" then there is something wrong with those peoples priorities and mindsets...

Yeh it is skyline no doubt, although when i think skyline since the passing of the man i always think of the 05' peeping its head over the top of skyline, even craig lowndes to some degree.

Was up there the other day. They have even painted over all the Peter Brock memorial writings on the wall along there only leaving one little patch up near the overhead sign as a tribute.

I'll always think of it as Brock's Skyline.

Also the very original writings on the wall at Skyline which was started the weekend after his death were painted over LONG ago when they repainted the wall as Brocks Skyline.

Official V8 Supercars
Peter Brock Skyline: Response to fans.

At all major sporting events around the world including stadiums, arenas and racetracks promoters have prominent areas that are utilised by valuable sponsors to feature their brand. Without such sponsors many of these sports and sporting events would be adversely affected. The Skyline at Mount Panorama has not changed its name, a major event sponsor has taken the rights to that part of the circuit. The Peter Brock Skyline signage will remain

I've never heard of it being referred to as Brock's Skyline before - only ever known it as Skyline.

If sponsorship keeps the track open for racing events, tack anyone's name on the front of Skyline. Will still just be Skyline to me.

Last time I checked 5 years ago or so, it was known as "Holden Skyline". Some time after Brock's death it must have changed.

I just looked at Google Maps, and I see "Biante model cars" as the sponsor in that area. So it could be just a change of sponsors from Biante to Dick Smith.

Plus, the map linked in that article the OP used has now changed. It now reads "Dick Smith (Brock's) Skyline".

mikeeman, there wasn't much ford left in them when Cosworth finished with them and they went racing, specially when Dick Johnson got busted cheating with the larger turbo he fitted.

You must be on drugs. I've been watching motorsport since the early 80s and such a thing never occured.
