Default twenty three phase electic motor, 150kw 2800Nm

A MELBOURNE-based start-up will soon start trials of a radical new motor in Australia’s only electric Commodore.

Smaller, lighter and less expensive than conventional units, the motor will power one of EV Engineering’s fleet of electrified Holden Commodores that feature a battery pack under the bonnet in place of a petrol engine.

Developing 150kW of power and a truck-like 2800Nm of torque (compared with 145kW/400Nm for the current EVE Commodore) the new motor is also claimed to be up to 30 per cent more efficient and 36kg lighter, contributing to increased battery range.

Rather than requiring a heavily modified rear sub-frame as with the current EVE Commodore, the more compact motor is hoped to fit inside a standard Holden rear differential, enabling the standard sub-frame to be retained.

2800NM?

Hot damn, forget diesel engines I need to get me a Focus with one of those bad boys driving the front wheels.

I love these news stories, great engineering, just hope it all works out and something comes of it 2800Nm
Awesome

You do realise that if it demonstrates 150kw @ 2800Nm it is only doing about 500rpm.

Well actually no. Being an electric motor it will not suffer from all of the harmonic, vibrational and mechanical design issues of conventional reciprocating engines. No gear box, no need for unequal shaft lengths and extremely fine control of applied current would make it quite easy to build a FWD vehicle that demonstrated almost no torque steer characteristics even in variable tractive conditions.

More or less an infinitely variable LSD. Cool tech behind it.

Ok but if my calc are right, an 18"-odd wheel needs to rotate about 40 times per second to go 100 kmh, is that right? So then if this axiflux electric motor is directly in the diff/ at wheel rotational speeds, isn't it good that high power and torque are at low rpm???

(40 per second means about 2400 rpm)

We got a nice DC motor at work that might fit, tis only "860Kw"... not bad for a fan motor!

Pretty impressive gain in efficiency for the electric motor, look forward to see how it goes in testing.

I'd take one straight away, range limitations aside; Normal EV motors are quick enough off the mark as it is.
I really hope this ends up in a series Aussie car body pronto!

Keep in mind that the torque this thing outputs must be compared to the engine and gearbox COMBINATION. So the base SISI 3.0 puts out 290Nm x 4.06 = ~1177Nm to the diff. So yes, it's a huge improvement, but it's not the 10 fold improvement some are undoubtedly thinking it to be. Also, that will probably be a peak torque figure at 0 or very low rpm and it will drop off quite a bit from there. Still very impressive though!

Interesting stuff. Sorry im no mechanical engineer but I'd love to learn more about it. What do you mean all the torque is there from 0rpm and will gradually decrease? Any sites you can point me to help understand?

Electic motors typically produce their maximum torque when they are stationary and it decreases as the speed increases. The motor design will change the general shape of the curve this torque-rpm relationship forms. A quick google search for "electric motor typical torque" revealed this:

http://www.reliance.com/mtr/mtrthrmn.htm

Check out the part about field windings about 2/3 down the page, of particular note is the series wound DC motor which can develop enormous torque at 0rpm but also run away if not under load.

ummmm ok then.....
Will have to remember this helpful tip for next time. For when I want to turn a phase or two off on a 3 phase motor..

well we do now with heavy motors, delta/star start up is very common.

Star delta does not turn phases off, it simply reduces the voltage applied and therefore the initial current drawn during the start.

still run 3 phase motors on a single phase.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Go and look up how it works.

Better still, ask a licensed electrical fitter/mechanic as they spend 4 years in an apprenticeship learning about and working on these things.

For a start you could ask wulos, or me.......

These modern brushless motors are able to change timing on the fly so you can have your torque and top end power fairly changable rather that just rely on the windings to determine the power curve.
