Ugly, but it'll be a monster.

Yeah it's ugly, but it'll go like stink.
There was a comparo between the previous one of these and the Mustang GT350R on road and track ( YouTube ). The mustang smashed it on the track. Expect the 10R80 Auto in the Mustang in 2017. |

It's looks like a 10 year old designed it.
The auto was Ford/GM co-developed. |

Nice old skool meets new school look.
Much more aggresive looking than mustang which has gone a bit softer looking of late.....

Now anything less than 6 speed and in some cases 7 speed people will not even look at them. Why is 10 speed even necessary? It's called progress. |

Sometimes progress means you end up going backwards... a 640hp supercharged V8 does not need 10 forward speeds to be faster than a 6 or 7 speed box... if anything, it may actually end up being slower due to the extra gear changes required.

There was as a thread somewhere discussing what would be the optimum number of gears but I can't find it for the life of me. I get what you are saying in regards to complexity vs benefit, however, in 10 to 20 years time people will be saying "Only a 10 speed?" EDIT: I don't mind the look of it. |

It's all about increasing fuel economy & keeping the emissions down.
The extra speeds let the PCM have more control over engine load, to minimise emissions & maximise economy. |

Transmission manufacturers have stated that 6 gears are more than enough to.cover operating range of road speeds and engine characteristics. Gains with more gears are fuel efficiency and acceleration - more gears also mean more friction and more complexity . Some specialised solutions are attractive such as crawler gear for a 4wd cars without dual range . Modern engines have wide torque bands and could work with 3 speed let alone 7 speed. Current 9speed and more gears are more point of difference than a necessity or progress. More is not always better . Last edited by SumoDog68; 17-03-2016 at 09:30 AM. |

However, it was not that long ago that people on this forum were whinging about the lack of sales of the Focus and partially blaming it on being a 5 speed compared to competitors being a 6 speed. As I have said before, it's not what is practical, it is what looks good on the spec sheet. These days with most people shopping on the internet instead of visiting dealerships and driving them, it is the spec sheet that sells. |

Why manufacturers ever felt the need to try and out do the Speco shifter used to convert the three on the tree to a three on the floor is beyond me. |

640HP with 640NM does not need 10 gears in fact they would be a pita. if its smooth enough it would probably sound and feel similar to a CVT lots of gears are good for diesels with small power bands - and obviously for economy. but if you buying a ZL1 I don't think economy is the main priority.

200 pounds lighter than the previous car, with approximately 60 more horses and 80 more lb-ft of torque...

Hopefully the transmission is air cooled so no chances of a milkshake. You will need a second mortgage to pay the Auto Transmission specialist.
