Default More power than advertised - has it ever happened with Aussie built cars?

Just stumbled across this blog talking about 8 cars which have more horsepower than advertised.

As the title says, does anyone know if the same has ever happened with Aussie built cars?

Nah mate, just someone who thought it was interesting to hear of cars being understated in their performance.

I have no affiliation with road and track.

+1. Dyno'd the Boss 335 before tuning it. Standard Power was 331kw at the rears. Not bad for a stocker.

Likewise F6's. Factory states 310 kw, but plenty of evidence available that supports more like 340 kw. (gotta keep Scruby quiet).

Was about to write the same. I believe the F6 has more power than the stated "310"

My stock FG was putting out 244rwkW on one of the most conservative dynos I've seen. That would equate to roughly 305-310kW at the flywheel (manual).

So in answer of your question, yes

From what I read, the Phase III put out 370 to 390 hp when it was advertised as 300 hp.

The japs had a gentleman's agreement that limited power to 206kw in the EVOs and WRX STIs. Most were more.

What about the other way around?

Seems everything HSV makes loses 200KW between the engine and the wheels compared to what it says on the badge

Reminds me of my mate in high school. He would always brag about how fast his old man's VN Commodore was and how fast VN V6's were and they were quicker than any Holden V8 built before them. He swore black and blue it would crack 0-100 in 6 seconds and rip amazing burn outs. Waited out the front of school one day to see this beast of a VN. A red VN Toyota Lexcen with faded paint pulled up instead.

Could also do a thread, less power than advertised.....but that would be bashing another particular brand again that might have 3 letters in the name.

The first of the Holden WH Statesman/Caprice with the LS1's were rated at 235kw, but theres been more than a couple of stockers that dyno'd with more than that at the treads..... The WH stato's got a better than average LS1 though

I read an article back in the day in street machine on the 335 gt when new. They test drove 2 from different dealers that were new. The manual made 335 at the wheels, the auto made 380, again at the wheels. Same day, same dyno, same conditions. On the track the Manual pulled a solid 12.9. The auto did 12.4... thats a pretty unspoken car if you ask me. .

Sounds like we've had a few of our own cars with more power then advertised.

What's the logic behind underrating the cars performance? Isn't it a marketing feature to promote the highest (and true) rating, resulting in more sales against the competition?

The 5.4 315 in the FPV's was closer to 330 kW, considering they dyno at 250+ RWkW on occasions.

Car companies in the late 60 early 70 use to reduce HP on purpose to satisfy the government at the time but this racket ended with the XA government finally figured it out

I bet you bought it happy with assuming there would be a nice drivetrain loss, as is what to be expected. I think it falls into the category of when wheels did the dyno tests of the gtf and the gts. Both supercharged, yet they made sure the gtf was cooled down before every run because it wasn't intercooled. The gts won. After many complaints, they did a re run on a now warm gtf and it over boosted and got over the line, yes the curve wasn't as user friendly, but that wasn't the purpose of the test, it was all about bragging rights. It looks like factory installed customer satisfaction to me, you don't see that very often these days, normally it's just disappointmentafter disappointment

I always said if my FG XR6T only had 270kw i'd eat my hat....

I got it dyno'd standard (it had a K&N filter in the standard airbox only) and made 365Hp at the wheels...

So yeah, making a tad more than 270..lol

Just on the Toyota Lexen Commy ,V6 thing, it was known that Toyota didn't like the tune done by Holden on the V6 Buick motor and that they had their own tune , it was also known that the a Toyota version had more poke !!!!!

Because, like any commodore before the VE, the body is made of cardboard and weighs 3 grams. Don't have an accident in one though....
