just took one of my work mates to pick up his new SR5 hilux, I had a look at the range of new trucks, i have to tell u that the new workmate or standard edition hilux is the biggest pile of thailand poo i have ever seen, its so bad i told the dealer he would have to pay me to take that truck of his yard. No wonder mitsubishi triton sales are going thru the roof, and looks like the 04 modle hilux will be the last of the low lux pimped rides for a while.
on a better note has anyone seen the 06 ford XR range yet???

The bodies on the new lux's are massive ... and the wheels and tyres look way too small cos of the body.

Yeah I remeber when the new body 'lux was first introduced. I didn't think they were any good. I spoke to a guy at Toyota and he was finding it hard to sell 04 'lux's due to the popularity of the '05.

I guess time will tell.

IMO, they are too plasic looking and not 'tradie' looking.

they're very plasticy the standard "tradie special" has 3/4 of the front unpainted, looks dodgy.

but all colourcoded they dont look too bad at all, they're heaps roomy inside... and have comfortable seats...

they're suposed to handle a lot better - but it couldnt be hard to make a hilux better lol....

are they strut front end finally? or still torsion bar :(

i wonder if they will last long enough to rack up 578,800 on the original engine and gearbox like our current hilux has....

You were right Dodge. That’s the ugliest looking ute I’ve ever seen. I can just see the Tokyo Shock Boys setting fire to one of these, even the Jumbuck looks better than that. Bring it on, I say. Ford Courier sales will go through the roof once the tradies see this. But what would you expect from the company that gave us motoring classics like the Echo and the Camry Sportivo?

Yeah my boss has the Triton turbo diesel mitubishi and its heaps good the only problem is the seats are uncomfortable. Way better than our old landcruiser just less tray space.

There are many problems problems with the Triton, and they extend beyond what most readers on this forums ever think about. Most of you will never buy a work truck, so your more than likely speaking out of your ***. But some of you will, and I respect those opinions.

We just sold our very last Triton form work, and we will never buy one again for the following reasons.

1. Turning circle the size of a B-Double. I never once made it around a U-Turn permitted intersection, always ran up the kerb, bloody terrible. Car parks were just dreadful.

2. Fuel consumption, the Triton managed to consume more petrol per 100km than any of our very thirstly V6 Rodeos, and it was gutless in comparison. th Rodeo at least made nearly 200HP for the amount of fuel it consumed. The Triton regularly got its **** whipped at the lights by 4cyl Hiluxs I you not.

3. Reliablility below average - in the three years and 100,000kms we drove it for we had to get the entire fuel system replaced, the gear box had to be recondition (lost two syncros), the speedo cable snapped twice, and the fuel consumption went right past the 20L/100km mark and took a $1000 service to bring it back to the 17l/100km that it normally sat on. The steering wheel corroded away (yes the plastic just wore away to spunge), and it was so flimsy you could bend the thing trying to make those bloody 25-point turns.

4. Resale - Mitsu are doing what Ford did to the EL, discounting the runout model, so our $37K Tritons were worth peanuts 3 years on when you can get a fully loaded brand spanker for a trickle over $30K, it took us 6 months per car to sell the thing and it went for $17K. Never again.

5. Just to put the icing on the cake, the Triton drove like a bus. It was horrbly nervous at high speed, rough as guts on the bitumen, and cabin space was woeful. I have never seen such a big car have such a small interior. It was always cramped no matter what you had inside. Never have I experienced this with the Rodeos and they weren't my favourite either.

SO on that note - Tritons are terrible. But since most users on this forum are keyboard drivers, they probably suit you down to the tea.

As for good work trucks - we have just bought a fleet of Turbo Diesel Nissan Navaras. We were planning to move over to a fleet of Hilux's but like mentioned above, they are dear, but you get what you pay for. Alot of the extra money you get back at resale, and you never have any of the said problems with a Hilux that you do with other brands. Having said that, if you abuse a car/truck then expect things to fail, but I hardly recall any of our vehicles being driven beyond there ability.

1.The Navara is sensational on fuel, the Boss has a 3.0TD Patrol and it too sips the diesel lovely.

2. They are very cheap compared to the competition, I think we got away with three Navara Dual Cab 4x4s with alloy trays, bullbars, and a/c for a trivle over $30K. The hilux was closer to $40K with those options, and Rodeo was $37K. For obvious reasons we didn't look at the tritons, they havn't changed in three years and with our experiences why wouldl we?

3. Build quality is excellent. I have covered 20K in my truck alone in six months and nothing has broken, rattled or caused me to raise an eybrow. And 750kms form $70 worth of diesel is good enough that the cost in fuel used per month is that much less that it actually pays for the repayments. Savnig around $600 in fuel for all three Navaras compared to the Rodeo and Triton.

4. Interior space is better than the triton, up front its excellent, the second row is not as good as the Rodeo which has lower seats and more head room.

5. Navara seems to handle a tray full of gear much better than the other two cars, and you can't feel the difference between an empy tray and a full one with 400kg worth of gear plus a passenger and back seat fully loaded.

As for me personally, wehn I pay the XR6 Turbo off I am moving on to a new SR5 Hilux, with a lot of options. I have been a passenger in one of these and let me tell you, it doesn't matter how ugly they are, they are sooo comfy and quiet. the power is astonishing, it pulls harder than my turbo off idle. It will give a Falcon a run for its money and easily hose an E-Series. It has got BALLS. The interior is high standard, but simply enough, the stereo is good, and the tray is big. The back seat is massive and all round you just feel damn good driving it. I havn't actually peddled one yet, so its out to the jusry untill then. But hopefully the new Navara and new Triton will lob into show rooms by the time I buy and I will be able to give them all a good go.

Essentially Australias Work trucks are all heading towards big HP and big size like our sepo cousins :

Yoot I agree with you on the Triton in some of what you said, the turning circle is ridiculous, I found the performance & fuel consumption to be ok for what it was. I've driven most of the Jap utes all dual cab except the Triton which was extra cab (very useful space back there - really too much for what you could load in, the Mazda/Courier doors would be great) including a 2.0 Hilux (just superceded model) which was very slow but everything else about it was good, Rodeo V6 also quite good but heavier on fuel, Courier petrol auto again very slow (was brand new ~200km on the clock though) and I thought the Hilux was better, and a Navara V6 which was stuffed, used heaps of fuel (20-40L/100km on gas depending on load) and was slow but you could tell the basic vehicle was good.

I think there is a bit of a barrier to overcome with the new Hilux appearance, once you get past that it looks to be a great vehicle (increase in size to Dodge Dakota size I would think?) however for a small work ute if that's what you need it's not really what it used to be. I read how much bigger the chassis rails are, it was a huge increase, typically Toyota have done a very thorough job.

I agree, I can't comment on the single cab 4x2 run-abouts, thats not what we use at work, we need 4x4 and dual cab, but you may be right about the Hilux there, infact, I never really liked and hilux that wasn't 4x4 and really, isn't a SR5 LOL. But for a work perspective, if we needed 4x2 single cabs, I'd get an RTV for sure! Much better than the truck like alternatives. And for me, the Turbo!
