There was this interesting discussion/debate going on at my work today between about 7 or 8 of us at lunch (guys of all different ethnic backgrounds and race.), and it was quite interesting and thought-provoking to hear what everyone had to say on this specific topic.
But the question was something along the lines of "if you were ever caught in a position where you could only save 1; your mother or your wife, and the other dies (no exceptions or off track thinking. pick 1 to save and 1 to die). which would you save and why?" some said wife and some said mother for various different reasons. some had to do with religious backgrounds and culture, etc. but me... even though i'm not married, i thought about the question quite hard, and i came to the conclusion that i'd save my mother, and let my wife die (if i had one), because a wife can always be replaced with another woman who you love just as much or even more. marriages can end in divorce, she could cheat on you, etc. there's a vast majority of complications that can result in marriages. but you only have 1 mother your entire life who will always love you and be there for you no matter what. a mother is definitely a son's most important woman in his life. the woman who gave you life, how could you give her death?! discuss.

Well I love my mum, but I also love my wife, I didn't get married with the thought of "I can always replace you", our mariage is set on being together for life and she is perfect for me, I'd be lucky to ever find another woman like her.
Our kids would also benefit from having a dad & mum around and how would I explain "I had to let your mum die so I could save my mum" to a 6 & 8 year old? It'd be a hard decision, but I have a family to look after, my own family now. My wife comes first, I'd save her for my kids & for me.

I'd keep the missus. Only she qualifies for me whispering sweet words in her ear and rolling around on the grassy knoll.
Somehow doing the same thing with the other person described does not carry the same amount of enthusiasm and excitement, and may be frowned upon by certain cultures, not to mention exceeding the limits of most countries' laws... |

Veh difficult question to answer.
Mum = the woman who raised you and does everything without hesitation. Wife = Life partner and will be with you until the end. NFI, not a decision that I'd like to make.

Depends on your situation. Happily married with kids.. the wife. No questions. Unmarried/Single and free loading off parents.. Mum.

I'd say my wife? Why? She is a constant source of debt for me. Good things to come from my wife? Alicia (6) and Liam (3 today). No, I wouldn't marry again either. Hell no! A marrige cert just gives a woman a right to everything you worked hard to get. Wife doesn't have to do anything for them. The divorce laws are bias. The lean toward women and give men nothing. I'd love not to work and come out with 50% or more of someones property and earnings.
If my mums still around, I have a baby sitter. Without my mum I'd have no chance of being able to work or sustain my current lifestyle. nb : I'm married and are not looking for divorce but have been separated and go back together. I have a little insight to the legal workings.

Wife... and with my mothers blessing too. Both are irreplaceable but I love my wofe as much, if not more, then my mother (who I love dearly) and my kids need a mother too.
Luckily, there will NEVER be a situation where I have to choose.

If you were happy and on good terms with your parents then I would assume that in a perfect world your parents would prob be happy for you to choose your wife over them. They've been around longer so should die first lol.

Wife to survive , without question. My wife represents the future and without her my life and our children's would be empty. I would also think that my mum would agree with me.

My father was given a slightly different option when my mum was pregnant with me.
My mother has kidney failure, was told not to have kids, as her body couldn't sustain us both. I had to be taken 6 weeks early when she was put on dialysis. Doctors said they only had enough resources to save one of us if anything went horribly wrong. Wife or daughter. He picked me. But mum's kidney's picked up for 12 years, and then after 6 weeks on dialysis she received a kidney transplant.

Thats a damn tough question and its interesting that most people who said mother dont have a wife/partner, I guess its hard to know unless you are put in the situation. I would go on the age factor in that my potential wife has much more living but damn its almost an impossible question.
