Cat on Bonnet

out: What is the best way of keeping a cat from sitting on your newly washed bonnet, any suggestions?

Acutually id like to know the answer to this. Not that my car is out of the garage anymore, but it used to happen to my old EL (wasnt my bloody cat either).

The best i could do was hit it with the hose when i caught it. So i guess my best advice is to stand guard with a hose.

don't use the hose. they'll take off mighty fast, digging their claws in real good for extra grip.

And you'll get a wet not so clean bonnet, I also learnt the hard way. If it's a recurring problem sprinkle a little pepper on your bonnet one time. They'll get up there take one sniff and never come back.

I second that , left my window in the au down one night , and got a supprise @430am when I got in to go to work
grabbed it by the scruff but slippery sucker got away and did 10 laps of interior with claws dug in.

PLEASE don't try this as I did this and it cost me $300 to get the scratches re painted and buffed

If I had a garage I would put my car in it, but I dont, and the cat is really starting to PI$$ me off, surely there is a proven method.

Confront the owner of the cat, and tell them the damage that letting letting the cat out is doing. If they couldn't care less then tell them how it is against the law to let it out (companion animals act 1997).
If they still couldn't care then threaten to trap the cat where they will have to pay the council a fee to pick it up; or else council will destroy it after 3 days.
If this doesn't make them take notice, or you don't know whose cat it is, then just trap the cat and take it to the council. You can hire the traps from kennards, or get them from this mob http://www.mascotwireworks.com.au/category.asp?id=74 . Alert your council to the damage the cat has caused (if any) and ring them a couple of days later to see if anyone has claimed the cat. If they say yes then tell them that you would like to speak to the owner of the cat, as your insurance company is looking at counter claiming for the damage sustained to your car.

If after all of this, the cat/owner is still problematic, then trap the cat again, as each time, the fine goes up and I think it's after the third time the animal is destroyed and the owner faces a huge fine.

There is no need for animal cruelty. If something is an inconvenience , you just destroy it? Come on people wake up.

Maybe you should use your garage! I would kill for one.

I'm not advocating animal cruelty, I am talking about the legal and proper way to dispose of nuisance cats within the law; with your local councils endorsement.

And as for destroying it, the fact of the matter remains that cats that are let roam free do more damage to the native fauna than any other animal. That's why councils and national parks wildlife services destroy the buggers. As a pet they're fine, if they are looked after responsibly. Letting them roam is akin to letting your dog roam the streets, and then pleading ignorant if it attacks someone.

i have a cat, and he's the best pet, but on the same token, i fully agree with what LTD has said in this thread....

trapping and taking it to the council is a lot more humane than other suggestions in this thread - ie the "i'll bring my dog around " etc

Another way to let the owners know that their cat is running feral is to humanely catch it, and put a message ( warning ) on it's collar, and let it trek home. Keep the council storm troopers out of it initially.

If I could shoot the cats that have ruined my bonnet without putting a hole in the windscreen I would do it. Destroying my property which they have on the BA bonnet, They deserve to be

I just leave my bonnet up - in the locked garage of course. For some reason, she just doesn't bother when it is up? although, the mothball idea has some merit. I wouldn't scare the cat if you catch it up there, like someone said, the claws come out for better traction to run away from you.......

If calling me an idiot makes you shirk the irresponsibility of letting your cat roam free, then so be it.

Before you get set to just shrug off my suggestion, talk to your local council.
The fact of the matter remains that cats are indeed predators and as an introduced species they do have an advantage over native wildlife. Additionally, they are largely responsible for endangering and eliminating several species of indigenous wildlife. Furthermore, attitudes of just letting your cat roam free has resulted in millions of litters of cats throughout Australia over the last 20 years further compounding the problem, and the damage caused is extremely widespread.

So again, if you feel that my post which described what your local authorities are doing about the problem was to harsh as it may have identified several people exacerbating the problem then feel free to call me an idiot and live in a nirvana of exobiological harmony where cats rule the animal kingdom.

BTW, I do like cats, they make a great pet.

I had this problem last winter. The neighbours cat decided that it was good to sit on my car and sleep. I did not appreciate the scratches that the flea bag left behind. So, a motion sensor, a valve and a hose pointing at the car connected to a tap turned to full pressure. Moggy gets up on my car, the motion sensor trips the valve, moggy spends the rest of a freezing cold desert winters night trying to get dry/warm. Funny thing is it took the stupid cat a week to work out that every time it got on my car, it got wet.....It dont do it anymore.

The best way to stop the cat from walking all over your car is top train it. If you watch it, and wait till it's on your car, then hit the panic button on your remote... they will P*** bolt. If you keep this up for about a week, they shouldn't back.
