Well most of you know i copped a canary (just a minor) for ground clearance (muffler) and painted calipers and discs. The ground clearance one ill cop on the chin, but the painted calipers and discs, wtf? i spoke to 2 RW certified mechanics and both have said no its not an unroadworthy item. I should probably start a poll but heres a better thing - should i fix the muffler problem and get a letter written from both independent mechanics or should i just bite the bullet and fix the calipers and rotors?

I have to agree with Krys here. There was nothing illegal with the painted calipers so why should you have to change them?

Well would signed/authorised letters from these RWC mechanics stand up to the road laws, in a stat-dec type of way?

its the same reason you cant chrome plate springs and other suspension items. yeah screw em....i'd imagine the stat dec from a couple of different certified rwc stations would be ample....... worst case scenario, if it doesnt hold up.......strip em off..... but i doubt it will come to that |

painted calipers not road worthy, thats gold...........
Guess Brembo are Red Metal then : How do you paint the discs? do you mean the centres of them? Its not like you painted the actaul rotors then that may be an issue but would wear off after a few stops..........

yeah, fix the exhaust and get as much info as possible about the brakes... most brake calipers and disc hubs have some sort of coating from factory anyway, be it aftermarket or OEM... Stick it to em!

I painted the hubs and calipers of my ED in a high temp metallic gunmetal grey colour, and haven't had any problems... The cop was just looking for things to pick out, and the red caught his eye, simple as that...
If the rule book doesn't say anything about it, and any aftermarket brake kits(And factory in some newer cars) are painted/powdercoated then the cop doesn't have a leg to stand on... technially speaking anyway, we all know how the rules can bend in their favour sometimes... :P

I know someone who got defected for painted calipers amongst other things. He fixed the other issues, turned up at Vicroads.
They went over the car and said i cant pass you the defect notice says you must change your calipers, my mate goes ok i will do that when you show me where it sais painted calipers are unroadworthy. The guy goes inside returns 15 minutes later takes the sticker off the screen and says "your free to go" : |

Yeah exactly. Don't prove anything efgiar. Just turn up with your RWC, and do what FRDXR6 says.

Trust me there is no where in the roadworthy books in Vic stating that paint on brakes can't be done. My dad is a licensed tester and I've read most of the paperwork and the actual r/w course test.
The officer must have hated you or just likes being a *****? I've been done for a minor myself. Pollution gear on a non-pollution vehicle rofl. I don't think the system they've set up works real well especially when they only have to suspect it's unroadworthy. The officer I had was good. We chatted for around 1/2 hour about a few things. I was happy for him to place a defect on the car if he thought it was illegal,. although I knew otherwise. I now keep the paperwork in the car which states the legalities The paperwork is Vicroads and police paperwork from the event itself.

Did you cop a ticket as well for use unsfe vehicle?
If not, just front Vic-Roads and do what FRDXR6 said. Is so, I would contest the ticket and get your roadworthy mechanics as witnesses. |

As others have said - fix the exhaust issue then just rock up to vicroads and if they have an issue with the painted callipers just ask them where it says in the book that painting them is illegal.
It probably doesn't mean much but I just had a look in the QLD roadworthy book, doesn't say anything about painted callipers there either... |

i'm doing my calipers in a few days, but it's alright, i'll get vicroads to come out and watch me while i do it, and engineer it all for me. HAHAHAHA :(
stat decs from the mechanics would be great for your cause, good luck getting em though as a lot of mechanics are as passive as a stone. it's one thing them telling you it's legal, it's another thing getting them to sign their name to that effect. hope it all goes well for you though mate.

On the defect notice did they actually put painted calipers or similar in the area of attention section, or did they just put breaks or break calipers and not mention the actually color and paint.
As said above, I'm pretty sure it's not a road worthy issue, it's certainly not in the Road Safety Act or in the Vic Pol Manual. I should know, I've read it. Depends how the defect notice itself is worded though, if I could read it I'd let you know, my bet, get the RWC done and take it down to Vic Roads, you should be safe.
