Phenolic Spacers on AU V8's
Do you think Phenolic spacers work? And are they worth the money (ie: bang 4 buck). Cheers

Has anyone had any luck fitting one of these to an AU without the manifold hitting the bonnet?
If so how thick was the spacer and did you modify anything to allow it to clear the bonnet? As for do they work? Certainly do! |

A 3/8" spacer under a high series bonnet was ok when I last had an explorer intake on. The edelbrock 5.0 rubbed the lining just a little.

I have a 1/2" one fitted to mine, and yes it does just hit the bonnet of the XR, but only just.(probably worse when launching hard)
What i find best about it is that it keeps the upper manifold very cool, which has got to be better. |

Ok, i think the material used to make it is refered to as phenolic, but what it is is a spacer which seperates the upper and lower intake manifolds.
Its purpose is to stop heat transfer between the intakes, and also it lengthens the runners and gives you a bit more torque aswell. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...59799_-1_10299 Remember, google is your friend. |

Phenolic smenolic im getting blown....................Maybe
But as has been said the spacers do work and keep the upper nice and cool. I actually didnt notice how cool the upper was until i fitted my Edelbrock and now having no spacer you can feel the heat.

Where do you get them from?

As for fitting they are very easy you can just sit the upper to the side once you undo the bolts or get someone to lift it whilst you install the spacer and then bolt it back up. It will make a differance to the upper intake manifold which will keep the tune more stable aswell as increasing the runner length slightly which helps torque.

Yes the 12mm one is the one that i had on mine, will even work with a 175kw as long as it has the explorer manifold which all AU V8's have so your set.

Hi All,
Is this mod worth doing while I'm getting my cam/springs/rockers replaced? Seems like a worthwhile addition while the mechanics doing the other mods. Norton |

Speaking of bolts make sure you get the spacer to suit the Explorer manifold not the GT40 one. The Explorer has 4 longs bolts, GT40 has 2 long bolts.
I paid about $100 delivered from HPW. Does it do anything? Wouldn't know, it's sitting on the shelf still. |

With the spacer and the stock bolts there is still 8-9mm of thread into the lower, you only need the actual diam of the thread to be in and you get full strength, as in if the bolt has a 8mm thread then you need 8mm onto a nut or in this case the lower and you have full strength. you cant do these bolts tight with the spacer they need hand tight only.

They do fit austin as my 13mm spacer still uses most of the original bolts.
and as shaun said, be careful, make sure you follow the factory tightening sequence and not any more than a good nip up. |
