Question Leaving Cash in ATM's?

G'day Everyone,

Had an interesting visit to Centro Whitsunday Shopping Centre this morning.
Strolling past a Suncorp Metway ATM (The type where your money falls out into a tray, not the Open then shut slot) :
I noticed a $50 note still sitting in the money tray out of the corner of my eye. So I had a second look, grabbed the $50's, and the transaction receipt.
Ended up being $700!!
Someone must have withdrawn it without knowing (Don't know how!) Or was distracted mid-transaction.
Either way, I handed it to security. He took my number for future reference.
The money is yet to be claimed. It has been returned to Suncorp Metway, and they will be in touch with me within a month if it's not claimed.
Amazing how someone could do that! I never would, thats for sure.

Anyone else left anything in ATM's? :

Cheers

Darran :

I went to an atm once just as a woman walked of, she left her card in the machine and on the screen it said "would you like to perform another transaction" Could have easily pressed yes and took all her money...but i am an honest one, I pressed no and chased her down to give her card back

So they left $700 or they withdrew that and left $50 there

The recipt would have had an account number, partial number or a time stamp where a whiz bang bank computer would / should be able to cross reference the info to a match as to who's account it came out of? - I guess this would only work if it was one of the banks own customers.

Good on you for handing it in.

they should be able to trace all transactions, after all they need to know who they're getting the money from, and who it's going to, they'd have a record of it

I left my girlfriend at an ATM once. Come to think of it, I really should go back and get her. :hihi:

Seriously though. I usually withdraw $750 every time I go to the bank so I don’t have to go as often and once I’d just walked away from the machine and noticed that a $50 was stuck in the little slot and didn’t fully come out because the note had a crease in it. I eventually got it out and now I always check.

Cheers

Honesty, is the best policy. (Is that the correct saying?)

I would definitely hand in left behind money at a ATM to the correct authority, but there has been times where I happen too see a 10 or a 20 on the ground, and I pick it up, to buy some Maccas. lol (Of course if it's not in a built up area, like a shopping centre)

My mum picked up a purse, with $50 in it, but there were no cards or nothing in it, just the purse, and the money. She just took it.

It would be alot different if there were credit cards, or a licence though.

You would be silly not to give it back as most ATMs have cameras.

Besides, I would anyway, that much money could mean a LOT to someone... I couldnt sleep at night otherwise. Ive never seen it happen though.

I would have thought that it would be fairly easy to trace - there would be record of that withdrawl on that account at that ATM whether or not it was their institution or not, I reckon.

I hope they get the money back to them.

Good work for handing it in darran

I've done that once with $60 (was alot of money when it happened coz i was 15)

Walked away with my card but not my money! (dick head)

The ATM sucked it back in and i got it back a few days later luckily.

I have left $170 in a Commonwealth ATM. It was about 5 in the morning and i was 100 mtrs down the road when i realized what i had done. When i got to the atm the money was gone. I found out later that if you dont take the money it gets sucked back in after 7 - 8 seconds. Very lucky. And to Darran, you will be rewarded somewhere, somehow. Just like in My Name Is Earl!

Yep, it's a good feeling handing in found shite, you would feel guilty for a while if you kept it unless you're a scum bag.
Always get the persons name or a receipt when you hand in property so you know they haven't kept it.
My nephew found a real neat digital camera, worth about $300, handed it in to the Police, no one claimed it so he got it after 3 months.

I went to use an atm a few years ago, and noticed that the screen was on the withdraw page, you know savings etc, someone punched there pin in, and must have been distracted and walked away with the atm sitting on that screen.
If i were a dodgy ****, I could have cleaned the account out, but i hit cancel and gave the card to the chick behind the desk, she couldnt believe it.
Thing is though, almost every ATM have camera's in them to stop thieves from doing that anyway.

Taking money that has been left behind is so easy to do.

I was in Perth around 16 months ago and was entering the main station. As I walked past the store in the station, a young Caucasian male around 175cm tall of a light to medium build walked out and tried to put a 20 in his pocket. He missed his pocket and it fell on the ground. I swooped on it and despite the temptation, chased him down as he was crossing the street.
He looked stoned but responded with a gratifying, "thanks man, you're a legend..you're a legend."

Was good.

But really, chances are that the money has been earned from somebody's hard work. 50 dollars is 2 hours of work (or 3) for people. You cannot get time back.

My old man is anal about checking the atm to ensure that he gets all his cash out. He counts his cash after every transaction to make sure the machine gave him the right amount as well.

He withdraws 490 (as 500 costs more to withdraw).

Thankyou Officer, could you describe him a little more accurately next time though?

I tried to withdraw 3 x $20 notes from a ST George ATM. I only could get TWO out the third was mangled inside. Do you think I could get St.George to give me my $20, no way they said. At the end of the day their ATM balanced so they refused to refund it. They next person must have got MY $20.

On a train in Italy from Genoa to Florence. Sharing a comparment with an older couple. Had to change trains at Pisa. The couple are half way down the corridoor when I notice the lady's purse sitting on the seat. I curiously looked inside and it was chock-a-block full of large denomination Euro notes. I followed her down to the exit and handed it to her. It felt good good to do the right thing, she said "gratzi" a couple of times and I was on my way. I treated her as I would like to be treated myself.

About six months later , back home, I left my wallet on the seat at a Michel's Patisserie with about $400 in it. I hadn't even realised when I got a call on my mobile from a couple saying that the had my wallet and they would meet me on the roof of the carpark with it, all cash in tact, they had been sitting next to us at Michel's. To this day I have no idea how they got my mobile number as it's not listed anywhere. I knew straight away that my act of decency at Pisa train station had been returned.

Quote from wife as they drove away: "see, not all Commodore owners are scumbags"

Was out for in the city for a mates bday a few weeks back, one of the waiters got bumped & dropped about $4oo on the floor and didn't notice. I picked it up and gave it back to her and she gave us free drinks all night, she was supprised that i gave it back and i got free drinks for the rest of the night as she said that would have ome out of her pay. A few hours later another waiter drop a bunch of the tipping tickets and 2 guys grabbed them and tried to walk off, she grabbed one guy and called a bouncer as he wouldn't give it back while his mate walked off. I grabbed his mate and took them along with $2oo for the trouble and gave her half.

Yet if i found $7oo in an atm i'd have kept it, unless the person was within sight of the atm so i could give it back.

Good on you for handing it back mate

I remember a few years ago i got paid with a Chueqe. after cashing in the 1800 fortnightly pay i stashed it in my pocket, walking across maroochydores busiest road i took a packet of cigarettes out of my pocket and all my cash flew away, i never even realized as the wind blew it behind me.

A lady driving by pulle dover and picked it all up and sent some kids on a bike to come and get me where she returned every note. i was that shocked i didnt even have the decency to hand her a reward or something like that :(

My week would of really been buggered had i not had any of that!

I left $50 in an ATM once. Went back only a few minutes later and it was gone.....
SAME ATM a couple of weeks later found $150.00 sitting in there. That made up for it 3 fold!

I have a policy.

Finders keepers, loser weepers. :

Take the money and run. If someone is dumb enough to leave that sort of cash in an ATM, you deserve to lose it. IMHO.

Also, you will never see the money, they'll just say someone "claimed" the money.

Mum has found $50 in an ATM. There was no one around as most of the shopping centre was closed, and the security there are dodgy anyway, so she kept it.

Walking back to our car after a night out at a local leagues club for dinner, a friend spotted $100 on the ground in the carpark.

She was going to buy a jacket she'd seen, but ended up shouting us all to the movies that night.

My old man transferred some money or asked for an account balance and left his card in the machine. The next person to come said yes to another transaction and took about $500. The bank couldn't do anything about it.
