What to do, what to do..

Sorry, this is long.

I'm in a slight pickle at the moment, so I am after some advice and opinions.

Being a Uni student, good money is hard to come by but I have been a good boy and saving hard (getting LOTS of hours at work too). I have been saving for a manual conversion for a few months now as things always seemed to crop up unexpectedly. Finally, next week I have allowed enough to buy the complete conversion and have a buffer $$$.

One of my best mates just got himself a full time job just before he finishes Uni. What has this got to do with my dilemma?! Well, now he won't get all those weeks/months of Uni holidays and wants to do something before he starts work. So he suggested recently to go on a 10 night cruise :baby bott I was hesitant at first, but we finally got together four good friends who wanted to go and could somehow afford it..

I can't afford it straight out, but I have been offered the money upfront from one of my family members as long as I pay it back, obviously.

But I keep having second thoughts. Especially just now when my car is doing funny things (diff, trans I dunno) and it could get costly.

Which leaves me where I am now.. I need a DEFINITE answer today! My friends will only go if I go (because it is cheaper for a group of four) and there is no one else left who can justify going. On one hand I get so pumped up thinking about this opportunity, 10 days and nights of solid drinking in the middle of the ocean, frequenting islands etc. But the other is saying, "be sensible. You can't get what you always want. You will get back with no money, a half broken car and more debt to pay off."

Blimey, I hate these choices. Thanks for your sensible opinions

Oppurtunity of a life time and one you'll remember forever, I'd go on the cruise.

For those 10 days you'll forget about your problems back at home, get to drink as much as you want, see things you may never get the opportunity to see again.

No matter what you do you problems are always going to crop up in life, you can either worry about them constantly or have the outlook that things do have a way of sorting themselves out.

Luke- like i told you before, forget the cruise, if your hammered the whole time how you gonna remember it anyway LOL. dont worry about the other problems your car has either. just go the T5!!!!!!!!!

I think you should go. Its experiences like that that you'll remember forever. And who cares about money. You'll pay it back eventually.

I agree with most posters here... go on the cruise! I know it's not a "sensible" decision financially and you really sound like you have a smart head on your shoulders, but sometimes in life there are opportunities and you just gotta grab em by the balls

The car will always be there, demanding your money, time and attention - it's a constant thing. The cruise is a one-off chance to let your hair down and parrr-teyyy, forgetting your woes and having a great time with your friends, and that's what life's truly about!

THe cruise is a waste of money imho.. You sit in the bar on a boat chasing skirts.. Not much different from going out on a Friday night except the price you pay for the priveledge on being aboard a cruise ship. Most cruises the intenary is so confined you barely see any of the sites as the off-shore time isn't much to write home about..

The problem being that you blow alot of money and then come home in debt driving a car that needed the bucks... To me it would be one of those 'kick myself' everytime I drove the car.

If you want to travel sure, travel properly. If you want to sit in a bar for 10 days just go to the Casino everynight for a fortnight, stumble home and fall asleep in the sun.

You saved the money for a reason, kudos to you, you set a goal and acheived it, I wouldn't change my plans due to peer pressure.

And if you make the wrong decision, learn from it, and dont make it again. Hindsigh is the only thing that ever tells you your decision was right, and thats not something you can sit and wait for.

go the cruise , leave your car auto. cars give you pleasure but they always drain your wallet and give you the shits. i'd rather forget about it for a while and go and chase the skirt and have fun with your mates 20years from now you wont remember the problems you were having with this car. but you will remember the cruise ,the skirt etc,etc. and you will have a car in in your drivway giving you stress in one way or another.

If it was me I would go the T5. Do you still have the GF? Is she going? Is skirt chasing an option?

It will be fun but then you have to pay back your loan and you will have to start all over with the T5 conversion. All for the novelty of getting ****ed like usual in another location.

Can you bear driving the auto for however long it takes to get the cash back?

how long before you finish uni? and how soon would this family member want their money back? would this family member have a problem with you borrowing money off them and spending lots of money on a t5 conversion AND a holiday?

Luke youre scaring me!
I gave up a lot for my falcon, and could have had a lot of fun when I was 17 18 19 that i didnt have becasue that car ruled what I did.

God I regret that so much.... I cant beleive I let a car rule my life and keep me from having fun with my mates... My point Luke, Take the f*ckin' cruise dude take it, and have an awwwesome time!

Yeah go on the cruise for sure! While a manual is cool, you can live with an auto for a bit longer Im sure.

Ive never been on a cruise, but I have heard good/bad stories. Is the cruise definate? Id be going somewhere else but I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

Some of my best memories are stuffing around with mates; schoolies, now that brings up some laughs (omg that was 4 years ago now, im so old!).

A hard choice...me fix up the Ford carry on with uni...then go on cruise with no debt worries,life choice go on the cruise cos you might get hit by a bus tomorrow.

**** the cruise, you won't have as much fun if your constantly worrying about debt, the car, etc, etc.

Wait until life is a little more concrete and you have less to worry about.

If you still have a g/f, then t5 all the way, even if you're single you will get sick of the cruise after a couple of nights. What's soo good about getting wasted everynight ?

Take the cruise in a few years time, it's not a once in a life time oppurtunity ffs. Cruise ships will still be around in a few years and so will your mates.

so not true the sad truth is your mates will fade to oblivien and you'll be married paying amortgage and looking after kids . trust me the cruise and your mates wont be there as easy as they are now. go go go....

Cruise.

Once your mates start working all the dynamics of groups and friendships change. It may be one, if not the last chance you'll get to go on holidays with friends.
