Today I had half a day off at home and decided to install my walbro 341 fuel pump . It was a can of worms to install. It took 15 minutes to remove the whole tank and 3 hours to get the dam walbro into position.
Why you may ask?? Firstly , the diameter of the walbro is way smaller than the fuel pump holder. Secondly I had to modify the existing fuel line to the new pump by using fuel line. After much time playing with it. She was ready to slide back in.. The pump would not fit back in its casing so I moved the pump into a slightly higher position in the holder .It went in and clipped together.I installed the lot ,reinstalled the tank and went for a drive. It drove ok but nothing to write home about. At home tonight I checked fuel pressure with the gauge on the after marker regulator. It sat where I set it at idle.35 psi. When i revved the motor a little pressure went a tad up then went down to 30 psi. I had tightened all hoses and crossed my t's. It is not holding fuel p[ressure when turned off and it drops to 20 psi when turned off. I think there may be 3 issues here. 1 the pump is crap or the fuel line is leaking in the tank. There is no whirring noise and the unit is nice and quiet. Releasing the vacumm hose allows pressure to remain constant when idling. The frigging pump is supposed to be direct replacement for our fords. It was definately not a direct replacement at all.It was totally different to my old pump. I am not surprised that the fuel pressure is playing up. This weekend the old pump will be going back in or a ford typhoon one going in... If people talk up walbro as a raplacement tell them get stuffed...its not comaptible and leads to headaches.

It was a genuine one from a reputable racing shop. The product may not be faulty but its not a direct replacement . I will get new fuel line and replace it all to make sure nothings leaking but highly doubt it. Leaky fuel pumps make a whirring sounds.

They are definitely not a "drop-in" replacement.
I would be more suspect of your fuel pressure reg if your fuel pressure at idle is inconsistent.

Well some good news after all that.I got on the dyno to just check where everything is and the pump is working fine. The tune is right out the window and the car pulled 161 rwkws where the standard injectors maxed out again even after playing with the regulator. In manual form the wagon could be pulling 171 rwkws

Shouldn't the reg+pump force more fuel in? how about all these turbo cars that have rising regs and standard injectors? maybe your just making more power then them, hehe.
Time for some XR8 injectors. :hihi: |
