Three killed in Werribee smash

Updated 15 minutes ago
Werribee car crash

Two teenagers and a 22-year-old man are dead and another teenager is in hospital after a car crash at Werribee in Victoria's south.

Police say the driver lost control of the car and smashed into a power pole at the intersection of Bulban Road and Thoroughbred Avenue about 9:20am.

A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl who were both in the back seat were thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The 22-year-old driver suffered critical injuries and died later in Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.

A second 16-year-old girl is in hospital in a stable condition.

Paramedic Darren Hodge says it was a shocking scene.

"To see a car that's almost torn in two by a light pole and then to see ambulance towels 50 metres away with people laying underneath them, it's terrible," he said.

"It's terrible for the people that heard that bang and would have come out to help."

Mr Hodge says the loss of the three young lives will have a huge impact on the community.

"There will probably be people getting a knock on their door by police right as we speak, being told that their children have been killed in a car accident," he said.

"The ripple effect that has on their community and their friends is horrific."

Investigations are underway into the crash.

Knowing Bulban rd rather well it doesn't really surprise me that this has happened. It's essentially an arrow straight stretch of road with a series of bumps and crests, by the look of it they were heading toward werribee and lost control with what looks like a fair amount of speed.

The speed limit at that particular part of the road is 80km/h but i would hazard a guess they would've been doing a bit more than that, this is common place with my experience of that particular road.

Such a tragedy to see this happen on such a regular basis.

It took me a long time to figure out that was a wagon. Not a pretty sight. I was going to ask if it was 60 or 80, but you've answered my question...

This kind of sight makes me incredibly sad...

Why is it at every accident so many are absolutely sure that it was hooning gone wrong.

This place can be such a lynch mob.

No one here has any idea at all what actually caused this tragedy. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty........

Given the information that has been supplied in this thread (Speed Limit of 80 and photo) it's hard not to come to that conclusion.

The photo imho clearly suggests that the speed prior to impact was well in excess of that speed limit.

I believe it looks like paint above the vehicle, but lower, inside the car, yes I believe it is... Not a sight for young eyes... but, sadly, one that should be seen by young eyes...

My car was F'd when I t-boned someone at around 90km/h, so imagine doing that sideways into a pole, yes thats entirely possible. Doesn't matter on the car, hit something like study sideways in anything and its going to come out like a banana.

Who says it was speeding/hooning? Bald tyres, oil on the road, car unsettled from hitting something, inexperienced driver at the wheel. All possible. The only people who know the exact details are unfortunately dead.

This is terrible news... i feel for the families & everyone involved. Too many young people don't know how to control a car properly in given situations. I do hope he wasn't being silly... my thoughts & prayers to the victims & families.

If they slid off the road at 80kmh, you wouldnt hit the pole at 80km remember. You would wash off quite a bit of speed sideways on a tarmac road in the dry. And this that case you've also got the gutter and nature strip to slow you down there too.

That is certainly a well-over-the-limit accident.

Well I know how all the states can save a fortune.

Disband all of the Forensic Investigation Units and just use all the free expert advice available on AFF.

Someone's son has died.
Someone's friend has died.
Someone's workmate has died.

None of you have any idea whatsoever so how about you pull your heads in until the truth is actually revealed and show a little respect.

Well funny you should mention that.

My little brother was killed on Feb 7 this year and there were quite a few suspicious circumstances.

The coroner took several weeks to exonerate all involved.

So how would I feel now if I had treated them the same way you are treating these?

edit: I see you have taken your first comments out. I too find it is usually better to think about things more than once before typing them on the forum.

Everyone is saying it was probably a young person who couldn't control the car properly. And that is probably true.
Still it is not compulsory for young drives to learn how to control a car on a wet skid pad.

The government will say if you are not speeding you will have more time to react and if you do hit something, you will hit it slower. But what is the point of having lots of reaction time if you do not know how to react and control the situation?

That's really another debate alltogether and has been thrown around here many times and I won't go into it as the past has shown, it get's heated.

But car control and respect should go hand in hand, learn how to control a vehicle in all condition's and drive to those condition's, and respect all other driver's and the condition's.

Hitting a pole in a old commodore wagon sideways.. do any of you guys actually know it had to be doing more than 50 or 60 or 70 at point of contact?

I don't... i'd suggest many of us don't, unless qualified to make such claims perhaps considering 3 people with long lives ahead of them have died would could keep our mouths shut.

TBH i can't belive we arn't allowed to talk about political matters but we can sit here throwing darts at the dead all night long.

I agree with this.

Next time any of you are doing 50, watch a powerpole as you pass it, imagine hitting it at that speed. Then imagine you are in a 15 year old car and that pole is coming in your door.
Don't have to be going overly fast to be badly injured.

Having said that, I know nothing about the conditions of this particular crash.

I have had someone close to me taken from this world by some tool that made a " stupid mistake " and to this day i will never forgive..

When these idiots decide to fool around on public roads i think that they should have their car taken and their right to EVER drive on the roads taken away. Might sound harsh but its a lot less harsh then getting a knock on the day at 3 am from the police to tell you that your kids been killed while being a tool in a car....

end rant

Oh wow, that is the best post I have ever ever read on AFF Bar none. Congrats mate. Exactly the feeling I have. Very very good work.
