Default What is it with people selling cars?

I went to look at a car advertised for sale 3 weeks ago, did a deal with the seller who was getting an RWC the next day. I duly offered a cash deposit which he refused and then fart arsed around for 2 weeks. He apologised and said he'd just been too busy at work to drop the car in for the roady.

Turns out the moron wanted to keep his car so he could use it for work for those 2 weeks and then hand it over. It seems he didn't expect to sell it so quickly. I duly put up with him for that time and when he was finally ready with the RWC in hand I said, sorry mate you took too long so I bought another one (I hadn't but that wasn't the point).

Last Thursday, I went to look at another one. Again I did a deal and left a decent deposit. His RWC had run out the day before so Friday he was taking the car back to the garage to get another an I was picking it up Fri arvo. He also had to get his father's signature on the paperwork (had just been placed in a home).

Bugger me dead, it's Sunday and I'm still waiting!!!!

moral is, dont even bother checking out a car unless the RWC has been done first. I dont.

by law in QLD the seller MUST display a RWC if a registered car is advertised for sale. Only to have morons who advertise "will come with roadworthy" which means when you want to buy the car, you cant, because theyve gotta book the car in somewhere which can take up to a couple weeks depending how busy the local workshop is.

Then theres a chance the car might fail on any stupid little thing which seems to be common these days. Which means more waiting, especially if the seller is unable or doesnt have the time to rectify the problem immediately.

Then on top of all this, the seller has the nerve to demand a deposit to start this process even though it all shouldve been done as per preparing a car for sale properly !!!

Let me know if the sale falls through, im selling one at the moment in QLD, an absolute bargain, drives fantastic cant be faulted. And it has a current roadworthy & rego !!

I had mine RWC inspected before I put it up for sale, knowing what was required and had the work done once I secured a sale. If the car doesn't sell for a month, then you have to pay for another RWC.

When was the last time you sold a regoed rwc car worth anything decent,10 grand or more and the first to inspect bought with cash ,wanted the road worthy and signed transfer papers ,then and there .....
The last decent purchase I had that was way over 10 large the whole experience took nearly a week
From first inspection, then got it properly inspected (not a road worthy,an inspection) then was happy enuf to continue with the deal
Owner organised the road worthy, I organised the bank to write a nice big fat cheque

The days of "First to inspect will buy " are nearly a thing of the past
The used market is huge

It is law that a regoed car must display or have a current RWC,but like all laws people flaunt it
My AU was regoed ,but no RWC supplied, big woop, 1 fone call it was inspected, failed on 1 brake bulb not working, not bad for a 12 year old car
Owner didn't have time,or know anyone local to do the RWC,the closest fella doin them was 100 Ks away, but I know the bloke who does mobile ones

Conversely, though, a RWC isn't cheap, and only lasts 30 days. I would not get one until I have commitment from a buyer. There's that many cars on the used car market that your chances of selling in 30 days are pretty low I reckon.

Mind you, I would definitely get one by an agreed date as a seller, for the buyer.

In QLD roadworthy last 2 months, and costs $67.

Its called preparing a car for sale. Alot of people think preparing a car means hosing it off & upolading some photos from their iphone onto carsales.

As i mentioned, its an offence to advertise a car in QLD without a RWC.

The roadworthy on my car im trying to sell runs out in 10 days, so ive booked in advance to have another one done on the last day so its good for another 2 months.

$150 and for 30 days ..... I never get a Rwc done until it is sold. Yes, have it ready for it as much as possible though. Find it hard to believe that you cannot even advertise an un RWC car? That is making things way too hard.

why is it hard to beleive? thats the rules in QLD. Selling with rego needs a rwc........selling it unreg'd, then deregister the car.

many reasons why its a good idea, such as the OP's stuff around, plus general problems with payment made on cars that arent able to be transfered to new owner.

I'm trying to find a car at the moment, and to be honest I'm about ready to forget the private market and buy from a dealer,
I've found here in Brisbane at least the dealers are more realistic with pricing than private sellers, the cars are generally ready to go, and you get the stat warrenty. For what it's worth.

Dave, a lot of people (including me) advertise with RWC and go get one when someone decides to buy it. I don't want to fork out the $$$ when your car may be on the market for a few months.

I've never met anyone that gives a ****, you just tell them it'll have a RWC when they come to get it.

good on you, and good on anyone who likes to buy a car that isnt ready to be sold.?

some people travel a long distance to view & buy a vehicle, who wants to be given the run-around with getting all the correct paperwork ready. I dont, obviously the OP doesnt. We must be unique.

Some would call it a refundable deposit.

Also, it may be an offence to advertise a car in QLD for sale that is not SUPPLIED with a RWC (if sold with rego). That's different to having one available when the car is inspected.

I was only trying to help the op out with some info. He/she is from Cairns, so it applied to him/her

QLD rules, RWC must be displayed & visible whilst car is advertised

Yes, I find it hard to believe as it sounds like a silly law compared to what I know .... that is all? In Vic you can advertise a car that will be supplied with one and in the many many cars I have bought and sold is not an issue for both buyer and seller. If someone is coming from interstate or long distance and is guaranteed to buy, then I will organise one but need the commitment before doing so. Obviously ... as you have so eloquently stated .... this is not the way in QLD.

Why is it that so many are such experts of the laws in states where they do not live and in many cases have never actually been.

In QLD you must have a current RWC before a car is advertised. That is the law.

Hmm, I have seen registered cars advertised in QLD with a disclaimer to the effect that it is not offered with registration, maybe that's a loophole or maybe they are just idiots risking a fine.

NB: In WA you can sell any ole POS provide it has an immobiliser. It's a joke.

whilst on the subject of selling cars, another thing that annoys me is cars that aren't advertised correctly.

i realise on carsales they sometimes don't have the correct description if you have modified your car from factory (ie some cars didn't come with manual trans etc) but i'm talking blatant errors and many from dealers who should know better.

as an example, have a look at FG2's. many/most are FG's!! why would you advertise as an FG2? very annoying. and then there is the 5 speeds that are advertised as 6sp!

yes, i annoy easy. might have one of those snickers myself.

The way I've done it is to get a RWC for advertising but I don't renew if it hasn't been sold. If they put down a deposit then I'll get the RWC done. The first RWC is to show the buyer that it is roadworthy and is able to be certified as such.

First time I sold a car here in QLD I rang QT to confirm about RWC. As has been said it is an offence to advertise your car without a RWC. Sooooo many people now advertise as "unregistered". As such I will not look at them, I don't give a hoot if you say you will get one. When I go see cars I do cash deals and I want to take it now not in two weeks.

I am also sick of seeing dirty cars etc, I rocked up to see a BMW recently advertised as in excellent condition to find most of the leather worn off the drivers seat, pass seat almost as bad. Also its hard to even get to see the car, all kinds of reasons etc, mum can show you the car, its at my auntys in Penrif when it was advertised as Vaucluse WTF??????.

The last car I sold (about a month ago) the buyer organised and paid for the RWC. Out of the 4 or 5 cars I have sold privately, I have never organised a RWC before the sale. Obviously NSW is quite different to Qld.
