MORE than 3000 people have been caught speeding in Queensland in the first day of a road safety campaign running across the state.
Police said they started phase two of the Queensland Christmas Road Safety Campaign on Monday with more than 3,000 speeding detections recorded. This phase of the campaign coincides with a national road safety operation, Operation Crossroads and runs from Monday 23 December, 2013 to Friday, 3 January 2014. During the Christmas holiday period, Queensland Police will be out in force specifically targeting the Fatal Five: speeding, fatigue, impaired driving (drink and drug), failure to wear a seat belt and distraction/inattention in a concerted effort to minimise road trauma. The road toll stood at 268 yesterday, compared with 277 at the same time last year. Acting Police Minister Andrew Powell said Queenslanders needed to arrive at their destinations safely. "One fatality on Queensland roads is a fatality too many," he said. "If you speed, drink drive, don't pay attention, don't wear a seatbelt or drive while tired, you will not only be caught by police, but you risk your life and the life of every other road user - and that is just not acceptable." My Comment More than 3000 booked for speeding ??? thats 178 a minute over the 24 hour period ??? and I believe in Santa Claus !!!!

A lot of the references to not driving tired that are made by authorities are made in order to get people thinking about it for their own safety. It is well recognised that it's not something that can be easily detected like drink driving and so on. Have a great Christmas, Russ. |

How do you know they are not talking about heavy vehicle drivers that have log books.

As has been done to death in other forum threads, you speed - you pay the price, or its revenue raising. Do we really need yet another pointless, unsolvable thread about this subject?

3000 idiots who will never learn.
Yes it is revenue raising. If you don't want to contribute to the fund raising, easy - don't speed. I am amazed at the number of idiots who pass me when I am sitting on 60km/h. I'd love them all to be booked. I follow the law, why can't they?

I guess some people can just not be helped. Nsw has double demerits and people still speed, went through two road closures today within 50km of two separate fatal accidents.

Yep, but we still have some here that will go on about the revenue raising etc and whinge about getting fines. When will people realise that it's a self imposed penalty? We all have a choice. Fines aren't compulsory.

Superyob..Why cannt we have an intelligent discussion on speed cameras ? And how they are used? How many of the 3,000 are just over the limit???? Cops won't say 1:!!!Modern cars are far safer than 10 years ago but pollies and cops cannot accept that.

I will say, that if I was the Premier, I would come out and tell everyone that yes, it is 'revenue raising'. Nothing wrong with being up front. People may not like it, but they would respect the transparency. Now, getting back to reality - 'just over' the limit? They are over. They are speeding. We can talk all day about speedo inaccuracies, but it is well known that speedos overestimate the speed - that is, if you are going 60, your actual speed is 57km/h etc. I bet the needle on all these people's speedos was WELL over the speed limit. I've seen my mum do it herself! I'm the one that has to tell her to slow down! In regards to modern cars being safer - that's true. It's human nature to push boundaries. You raise the speed limit, people will still go over it. In this case, I equate it to a bird that keeps flying into a window. They never learn. At the end of the day, it comes down to respecting the law, whether you agree with it or not.

I saw one officer this morning targeting motorists from the peak of a large hill as they were approaching the top. Unfortunately no one will know whether they were actually speeding because the older non recording lidar device she was using, is officially not accurate anywhere other than flat ground in accordance with AS 4691.1-2003 & 4691.2-2003. But shhhh the kind officers won't tell if you won't. ;)

The first speeding threshold for ticketing (QLD) used to be for exceeding the limit by 5kmh but not more than 10kmh - rather sensible and fair enough. Now the threshold reads not more than 13kmh over the speed limit, in other words technically 1 - 13kmh over. Sensibly I'm not implying anyone is going to get pinged for 2km over the limit. Majority of the time I make a conscious effort not to speed and for the most part it's all good, occasionally I do drift over by 5km or more. Every now and then I plant it and well exceed the limit. Throw the book at me for that and I'll cop it on the chin, anything less than 5km over in a 60 zone is not about safety. School zones are a different matter - zero tolerance should be mandated there. Cheers!

To all the Holier than thou types that are constantly rabbiting on about....
"Don't speed and and you wont get booked"... "I NEVER break any road rules so I don't get booked"... "ANYTHING over the posted limit is speeding and you deserve to go to gaol"..... "I'm such a law abiding citizen that I've never been booked for anything in my life, therefore I can sprout off like a Gospel preacher" Kindly STFU!! or cop a warning for being argumentative. The OP merely posted an interesting article from a QLD paper about how many people were DETECTED, not booked!

Seems people that are whinging about getting booked are just unable to accept that they have done the wrong thing, and that it's not the government, the police, politicians who who ever else they blame's fault it's no one fault except their own I can not believe that something so simple and basic even needs discussing. Every person that holds a drivers license know what the rules and tolerances are, so of you decide not to stick to the rules than it is your decision. I never once got booked accidentally being 1 km over it does not happen. Everything is set up so this does not happen, of you actually got booked then you were substantially over the limit, or extremely careless in your driving. Speedos in cars are set up to read faster than what you are going, so when you are reading 60 on your speedo you are actually going slower. Speed cameras are set to give you a discount as well, and they are clearly visible, a highway car will give you a further discount, and the the actual radar will give you a discount as they are also calibrated to give a lower reding than the actual speed. So you have to be substantially over the limit to even register as speeding. Now the original article referred here is a police operation, so the 3000 tickets would have been issued by police who are part of the special operation and who are working instead of having Xmas with their family , nothing to do with cameras, as the results from the cameras would not even be known yet, so it's probably more that 3000 people booked if you consider cameras as well. Just get a bit boring listening to the same people, harping on about safer cars, better roads, how great a driver they are yet they are unable to keep a constant speed, how they pay attention to everything yet are unable to see a speed camera and the associated warning signs. Really they are contradicting their own arguments. Seriously anyone getting booked by a speed camaera deserves it, obviously you are not paying attention, and anyone getting booked by police was obviously well over the limit considering. Now these people have to resort to treating forum members who will present an argument. So are you suggesting that you will get booked if you don't speed? So now we have a moderator sprouting BS and threatening forum members as well as bypassing the swear filter, so who moderates the moderators. Post has been reported anyway and will see what happens.

Stuff like the OP's article link needs to be known far and wide, the shenanigans govco get up to in the name of road safety (hell all of their bullcrap) need to stop and those meant to be representing us need to be held to account for their actions done in our name. Those detections will lead to fines and I'll bet my hat 95% of the "speeding" is for less than 5km over the posted limit. Oh and as an FYI XB GS, I received a fine from officer Robocop for an alleged speed of 51km/h in a 50 zone. To say I kicked up a stink contesting it would be an understatement. |

Yeah it is revenue raising. Yeah you can avoid fines by obeying the law.
But if you decide to get your knowledge from sources besides commercial tv advertising you'll find that driving 10 percent under the limit is more dangerous than 10 precent over. You'll also find that driving eight hoursat 130mph is safer than 10 hours at 110kmph. Its the fact that the speeding fine philosophy is causing more accidents and deaths is s what get s up powerless nose |

Oh and the "being held accountable for your actions" chestnut irks me to end. So the police are there to hold us to account? Why, we never asked for them to, nor asked for them at all? When the shoe is on the other foot and we need to hold those in power to account, we get told to get nicked. Oh and by the way, the detected speed was 53km/h, the alleged speed was 51, thats how.
