Default Greatest Movie Car Chases!

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd lst some of my favorite film/television car / car chase scenes.

Bullit This is a film from the '60s starring Steve McQueen. There's a scene where he is being tailed by a black Charger in his green Mustang before turning the tables and chasing them. The location goes from those big suburban hills in San Fransisco out on to the freeway, with funky instrumental music.

Driver This '70s film started the computer game series of the same name. A professional getaway driver is setup to get caught and goes after the people who wronged him. Apart from the chase scenes there's a scene where he has to impress his new employers and then *carefully*wrecks a Mercedes Benz in a car park with his future employers in it.

The Gauntlet On a motorbike, Clint Eastwood and a girl are chased by a nasty-looking black Gazelle helicopter through mountains, tunnels and desert.

The Dead Pool Dirty Harry in the '80s, driving a Dodge or Oldsmobile, being chased by a remote control car with a bomb, through the San Fransisco suburban hills, which is in turn being chased by the bad guy in another car controlling it.

To Live and Die in L.A. After being caught out, a couple of '80s LA cops have to evade their own police force and at one stage try to make it in front of a speeding locomotive (not at a crossing!) to cut off the pursuers. I think they drove a boxy Chevy Caprice or similar.

The French Connection In this '60s or '70s cop thriller flick, Gene Hackman chases an elevated train, driving madly through city streets in an attempt to catch a drug dealer who has taken control of the train. A lot of the footage was done without a filming permit.

Does anyone else have any favorites?

Andrew.

Ronin has some good stuff in it, all european cars but not bad. The new gone in 60 seconds had some entertaining driving as well.

Pretty good? It would have to be the greatest! I love the fact that it was the entire movie and that it lasted 45 minutes! I also love the way they used the same car right through, even thought they slammed a pole by accident.

I saw the original 60 Seconds as well and even the version repackaged as another title with a re-filmed first act. It's like a documentary.

I really disliked the remake and The fast and the Furious. Blurgh.

Where are you located? I've seen Driver quite frequently in DS Powerhouse and JB Hi-Fi. It is in a yellow and black packaging. I picked it up a few months ago.

Hey guys
How about the car chase in The Blues Brothers.
The best stuff is in the Shopping Mall with all the cop cars crashing through the shops.

Vanishing Point, a whole long car chase on the open freeway. A guy has to deliver a supercharged white Dodge Challenger to its owner and, pumped up on speed, causes havoc with the police in several states. There's also the sub-plot of his past as a police officer and racing car driver and a blind radio DJ who helps him along the way.

But apart from the car scenes, the film should be watched for the visuals and music. A real time piece.

Haven't seen the remake but it looked a bit different with the pregnant-wife plot.

Duel A sales rep is driving out to see a customer when he is rudely tailgated by a truck, which comes back many times and it only gets worse and worse. Speilberg's first big film.

Repo Man A young man (Emilio Estevez) gets employed working a reposession company. When a big notice comes out for the capture of a Chevy, he and other companies try to find it. They discover that it has an alien in the boot, or some alien device.

Licence to Drive Corey Haim stars in this '80s teen comedy about a boy who fails his driving test, but doesn't tell his parents, and is given his grandpa's Caddy to drive for the weekend but all these bad things happen to it.

Point Blank '60s revenge film stars Lee Marvin. While it doesn't have much car action and is very slow, there's this really out-of-place scene where he test-drives a new car and ends up smashing it up to get info from the car dealer.

Before Marvin starts the car, he puts his seatbelt on. The dealer says, "Oh, you don't need to put that on." It was the sixties, after all. THen he goes crazy with his driving to scare him.

Maximum Overdrive Another Estevez film where machines on Earth come alive, including a heap of trucks, army jeep, vending machine, ice cream truck, electric kitchen knife, etc. Estevez and a group of people at a diner are being held hostage by a wicked toy company truck that has a huge goblin face on the front. Based on a story by Stephen King and has an AC/DC track at the start which then leads to the opening scene of an opening bridge that opens while cars are still on it.

The Big Steal Aussie film starring Ben Mendelson (sp?) about a boy who has a dream to get a Jag only to have the engine swapped for a lemon behind his back after he buys it from the great Steve Bisley playing a used car salesman. Ben, his geeky friend and his mate in a Monaro come up with a plan to swap the engine back but it goes pear-shaped.

Malcolm Another Aussie flick about a tram-addict who developed a car that can split in two to help with a bank robbery. Stars a very young Colin Friels. There's a scene of Melbourne where you can see the spot where the Crown Casino was later constructed.

The Wraith A really bad B-grade movie starring young Charlie Sheen as a ghost who drives a concept Dodge supercar to kill teen males who ran him down, or something.

Goodbye Pork Pie A kiwi flick, from the early 80's, dedicated to "the days when you could fill your car up on $5" Some crazed nutter picks up some cold hag's wallet, and uses her identity to hire a mini. He drives down to Auckland, and picks up some old geezer with wife troubles. They continue driving south and do a whole heap of other stuff. Bloody awesome film, and great chase scenes.

what about Running on empty
There was one from the early 80's or late 70's which featured a black Lincon I think.
It was the devils car and it drove around aimlessly killing people. In one of the car chases it barrel rolled onto the cop cars destroying them but I carn't remember the name of it. Does anyone remember this movie?

Your not thinking of the 80's movie with the Red XY, Black Dodge Charger and Black '55 Chev?

Another good car chase.
