Default IRON CHEF - Any Fans?

Went to the Observatory Hotel in Sydney on the 5th December for the 7 course meal in part prepared by iron chefs Hiroyuki Sakai and Chen Kenichi. Awsome night, had a great time - they seem like good fun loving people. some pics below.

Me doing a bad job of commentary for one of the dishes.

The canapes - they kicked ***.

Getting a cleaver and my iron chef book signed.

Group shot - Left to right - Hiroyuki Sakai, Boyd Chan (my brother in law), ME!, Chen Kenichi.

Great night - seven courses all great with wines matched by the observatory sommelier. They even valet parked the XR6T ..... noice. Got heaps of pics, if anyone wants a look let me know - I can post more pics.

How much did it cost if you don't mind me asking, and did they westernise it? I used to watch the show religiously but for some reason I can't get SBS anymore so can no longer watch. Probably seen all the episodes anyway.

Recently went to Singpore and went to a Penang place that has received top awards for 30 years and to me the food was largely inedible.

Cost was $595. I really liked the menu - it was a great fusion food night - east met west and I ate it.

I'll have to keep a lookout for their next visit. I've known of them coming out twice before and always after the fact. :(

A little pricey but after watching so much Iron Chef I'm genuinely intrigued what their food tastes like... $595 worth of intrigue. ;)

We watch Iron Chef religiously! Often we play the "Fukison" game which is everytime the floor commentator says "Fukison" you have a shot!

We tried doing that with Gordon Ramsay every time he said the "F" word but not even I can drink that much that quickly!!

Has anyone seen an episode with Masihiko Kobe - the Italian Iron Chef? We watched it on You Tube...He is great!

Chen Kinechi (check my avatar) is my favourite chef of the lot, followed by Sakai. Turbotaxi mate, you hit the jackpot there.

Mate, good to see Chen still holding that bloody cleaver.
Wish I knew about it because it looks like you had a ball, and the two Iron chefs there were by far the best of the whole show. Did you get to try Chens sechuan style cooking?
At least, when they started cooking did you comment; "Bang the Gong, we are on"? Seriously, the commentary is hilarious for that show, truly a cult hit.

Im always interested in what the main ingredient is each episode.

My favourite ones are anything with Seafood or Steak.

It's a great show, we came by it by accident when channel surfing and were humoured by the commenting in english.

The certainly get their money's worth out of the ingredients though, if they cook fish they use the whole bloody thing, the brains, the eyeballs and the poo shoot. One episode the key ingredient was carp! Who else eats that crap!

You know, I've watched it a few times, didn't mind it the first few times, but the one thing that made me go silly, is the english dubs.....
Just wish they could put a bit more in to it, just to tidy up a bit of sloppy dubbing.

You know, like those Yankee Colgate ad's on TV, that the mouth doesn't match the audio timing (etc etc).
Sorry, it just doesn't cut it for me.

But yes, very creative (great concept), and these Masters try very hard to not be beaten.

It's funny, the dubbing doesn't even register with me as a show that's dubbed. It's a cooking show, I'm not focusing on anyone 'acting' so I guess trying to synchronise mouth movements with words I find completely secondary to what's going on.

Iron Chef America IMO is an absolute disaster. No dubbing but no character to the show and the Iron Chef's don't seem to have that much personality (or at least the personality doesn't come out in the show).

That would have been cool. I love The iron chef and imho chen looks like he would be a laid back fun kind of guy. Always makes me laugh when he is cooking. What ever happened to michiba? I heard he got sick and yes I realise we are seeing eps from years ago.

Iron chef america is on Foxtel and is terrible. I hate when yanks try to rip off other countries shows.

Michiba is in his mid 70's these days, he doesnt like to travel. I asked about bringing him out and organisers were not hopeful.

But I see him as the best of them all and he did win the "best chef in the world" title.
