As the Laser is based on the Mazda 323, I don't think it is ULP friendly, based on the following from the Mazda web site:
http://www.mazda.com.au/articleZone....5#Article-1018 UNLEADED FUEL - Can my older model Mazda take unleaded fuel? 323 wagon - 1983 on 323 except ss - 1983 on BUT since the car is a $500 learner special, I'd just run it on ULP and see how it goes. If it starts pinging under load, then go to premium.

Good question - I'd be doing exactly what '67 recommends!

According to fordlazer.com
http://www.fordlaser.com/section.php...rticles&id=148 Lasers before June, 1984, required leaded petrol but are easliy converted to unleaded with hardened valve seats |

Does it have an Alloy head?
Alloy heads have hard valve seats suitable for ULP. If so it should be suilable for ULP. I had an 81 Mazda 323 SS, Twin carb, and it ran fine on Pulp. It needed Premium due to the 10:1 compression ratio. It actually went better on PULP then on Leaded.
