Default Blown 4.0

... and not in the good sence.

Tonight I went for a drive up the street in my EB to get some things. I was getting along pretty quick revved out second and went to fourth when I hear this god awful BANG!! CHINK! CHINK! and the car stalled. Pulled over to the side of the road and had a look under the car etc, all looked fine.

So I walk back up the road about 40 metres and see a few chunks of metal and a bolt sitting in the middle of the road. Ohh crap. Go back to the car and have a look under the bonnet. I've blown a BIG chunk out of my timing case and the chain is exposed. :( I guess you could say 'I did a Sunny' looked almost identical to what happened to his motor not good. Tried to start it but no luck it just cranks and cranks but won't fire.

I've got no idea what happened to cause it, maybe the timing chain had skipped some teeth or something, no idea really.

So now i'm gunna have to get it towed home tommorrow, and I guess i'll be replacing the motor sooner than I though. Just need to save up some more moolah so I can get an EL motor or maybe get a semi reco one from John XR6.

So that's been my not soo great evening. I'll post up some pics tommorrow when I get it home. :gren:

yes it's deffinately your fault Jared. :P Heh, i'm not too worried about it I still have the EA to drive around while I save up a bit.

ea silver ghia - Nah I've only had it a couple of months, blown the clutch and now the motor, although the motor was pretty tired anyways, I'm just at a loss as to why it happened.

Oh well sh*t happens.

ah that sucks.....

If my motor goes (it shouldn't) I would look at getting a crappy 2nd hand one then getting it reco-ed, or even try doing it myself. A stright swap with a 2nd hand motor seems like a waste.

Hope it all gets fixed quick.

I've seen a 4.0 smash the timing cover to pieces...all because of the PCV valve...

LPG Back fire cause PCV to break, ball bearing in PCV finds its way into timing case, obstruction in timing case smashes open timing case.

My car is on Gas Nik, it just doesnt have a tank. : I'll pull the rocker cover off tommorrow night and see if I can suss out what may have happened.

Polyal, I don't think it would be a waste to put in a Low km EL engine, i'm surprised my motor has had it allready only done 270,000 k's. Still ran a flat 16 a couple of weeks back.

Sounds exactly the same as mine Damo! If the chain still has tension it will be a seized dizzy shaft most likely. How was the oil level?

Yeah I think that was a recall on EL's or something, they replaced all the metal PCV's with plastic ones after that.

wouldn't be the other way, replace plastic ones with metal ones so they can't be broken?

Yeha apparently it has a crow cam, i've pulled that out now and need to confirm it is a crowcam so i can sell it. I didn't fiddle with the motor at all, but it was pretty worn anyways and blew a fairbit of smoke on startup.

hahah ^^ did you looks at the date of this thread. The chain still had tension, but the aux shaft is way outta wack, which somehow forced the chain off and to bust into the timing case. I'm swapping the motor this weekend anyways.
