Default Ford spare parts prices..... OMG!!!

Hi,

I changed thermostat on EL Fairmont 5.0, tightened too much and cracked thermostat housing..

All the spare parts places said they didnt list aftermarket housings for this car. So I winced and then rang ford for a genuine part....

The guy cockily says $480 bucks mate, I got one left. It was like someone punched me square on the nose. He confirmed that its the same price and part for EB-AU.

So I called back Bursen auto parts and said I know you said you dont list it but what about an EB V8 housing. (maybe their catalogue is old). They said "you sitting down" yeah, got one, but its $90. He thought I was gonna scream but I ran as fast as I could to Grab it. On the package it says EB-AU so obviously he didnt check the first time round.

Can you beleive it $480 for a genuine thermostat housing for EL 5.0... Any other ridiculous prices for genuine ford parts??

Thats the funny part an after market one was less than $100 (this was a few years ago now). We just rang Mitsubishi for a laugh , and what a laugh we had . The guy looking it up couldnt even believe it.

All I know is that ford asked me $480 for a thermostat housing and I bought the same part from Bursen for $90. When I went home I realised a small hose that hooks onto it was split. this time Bursen couldnt help me so I has to return to ford, the same guy who quoted me $480 for the thermostat started licking his lips... (they can smell blood when you return) ahhh ya want the thermostat. No just the hose. He still hit me up for $36. I was frothing at the mouth, a small rubber hose maybe 3 inchs long $36.

For the same hose I went to super cheap and found a torana bypass hose of the same size. Had a very similar 90 degree bend so bought it for $10 and cut it down. That was 4 years ago and it is fine.

If you are getting married NEVER EVER tell the florist, carhire etc that you are getting married, say its for a birthday or work party, whatever.. it will halve the price!

Its not always true though, Ford have been cheaper on parts than aftermarket, a front caliper kit for both sides from Ford, $37, while aftermarket only did one caliper, and was a couple of dollars dearer. Ford also only charged me $6 for a blank to suit an E series console, the same item went for $14 on ebay.

Same with some Mazda/Ford parts, its pays to check both, usually Ford is cheaper.

Theres a day set aside the following month, surprisingly the 14th also. Tell her youll support Valentines day when she supports the next one, it involves you getting a cooked steak and ummm, lots of 'blowing'.

Mitsu, Holden, Ford....I've been ripped off by all of them.

My daily driver is a Audi A3T and it's the cheapest car, by far, to maintain out of the dozen or so I've had.

As a example, I had the cam belt changed, and was under $500 including labour.

I remember once, on a Mitsu Galant V6 24v, being charged over $1000 for the same thing.

imagine if you went to ford and said I like the new orion falcon XT but i wanna put it together myself, saves the cost of assembly. Give me one of everything. the car would cost $10,000,000. Plus you have to put it together still.
