Favourite road?

Now, I'm not sure if this is a breach of the TOC here, but, I feel like going for a blat up a nice road - within the legal limits of course - but I'd like somewhere new to go. Anyone got any favourite strip of road good for a nice drive?

Try Mt Dandenong Rd up through Olinda or up through Belgrave.......Beautiful scenery and nice and twisty.

Ooooh yeah, damn straight! I prefer coming back up to the trip down, neither way is fun if ya get stuck behind some drongo who insists on cooking their brakes the whole way though. Haven't done the trip in the VN yet but I'll get round to it eventually.

Ooooh ... that's Queanbeyan ... to Braidwood ... to Batemans Bay ... that's only one short leg I used to take on my night time drive's .... great road ... a little scarey in fog around Government Bend though.

Also ... just south of Coffs Harbour ... take the road up the mountain to Dorrigo ... then across from there to Armidale ... very nice.

South Coast ... Macquarie Pass and Kangaroo Valley in clear conditions.

Bells Line of Road up to Lithgow is fun.

Old Hume Hwy from Camden down through Picton and down to Bargo (instead of taking the freeway south ... also Picton Rod down to Wollongong is good ... along with Appin Rd from Campbelltown ... heading to Wollongong.

The entire coast road from Wollongong all the way to the Victorian border is a good drive ... can get really nice down past Bateman's Bay.

Putty Road up to Singleton from Windsor is a great road ... is a common Sports Bike route on weekends.

Also Old Pacific Hwy up the coast from Sydney.

In Victoria ... the Great Ocean Rd was a top road to drive ... have only done it once ... would love to drive it again.

in QLD ... head up the Glasshouse Mountains and up to Montville and Maleny ... some nice roads up there as well.

I prefer the Pacific Hwy up to QLD as well ... much more interesting than the New England Hwy.

These are just a few roads I have driven recently that I can remember ... there are many more though.

Few years ago I drove from Bairnsdale to Mt Hotham....one of the best pieces of road I have been on. Mind you that was in summer, would be a bit harder now.

You could always use the test track that MOTOR mag use.
Head out the Calder Fwy, until you hit Macedon.
Head up through Macedon, then up the big long hill towards the township of Mt.Macedon. Grab a meal at the Mt Pub (they still serve lambs brains) then head up to the Memorial Cross for some very spectacular views.

Once you've had enough fresh air, point the car at Woodend (turn left at the T from the cross) and enjoy some hard corners and short straights.

Be wary of the leaves in the dark corners, they get a little slippery.

The road isn't designed for high speed, so enjoy the 2nd and 3rd gears through the corners, then just lean on the right pedal whilst not going over the 100km limit.

Then you can reach Woodend, top up with BP Ultimate and grab an award winning Vanilla Slice at Bourkies bakery over the road from the BP. They are certainly something! Bourkies currently make 750 snot blocks a day, and they all get sold.

Once you're finished, you can either go back over the mount, or just tootle down the Calder and back to Melbourne. Personally, I'd go back over the mountain, the tight corners are much more fun going up hill!

Remeber to have a rest at Mt.Macedon before you start the descent. It's a long straight drop with a sharp right at the end, if your brakes are tired after the sprint, you could risk doing some nasty damage to your ride. Let them cool whilst you're enjoying a cool lemonade at the mt.pub.

Oh, make sure you keep the speed down through the towns, they're small townships and the last thing you want to do is get the locals warning the police of your presence.

i dunno bout melb but there is a place in sydney called magnetic mountain and i can tell u for sure that cars do go up hill ive done it twice once with my fairlane and my sprint its a spin out

Dammit.. been too long since I did the Mt Macedon run.. a great way to spend an afternoon and in winter you get to drive through the clouds.

As for something more local BLC.. A blast out past the Ford proving grounds at the You Yangs and into the Brisbane ranges around Anakie is well worth a couple hours of fun.

There are lots around. One of my favourites is in Tassie of all places.

You follow the main hwy from Devonport all the way to the richmond turnoff, I think the stretch is called the B276. Absolutely awesome, twists along mountain faces and goes through some nice country towns.

Yep, Dan got it right for SA - Gorge Rd would be the pick there... yet to take Eamon up there too! My Dad used to take his old Prefect up there with his mates, at night and drive it with no lights. Reportedly got the Prefect on two wheels around that very sharp bend at the bottom.. until his mate in the backseat shifted his butt over and the car came back down...

In Vic, Great Ocean Road is awesome, if you can do it without getting held up by tourist grandpas.

Best road I have ever been on is the road up to the top of the volcano on the island of Maui in Hawaii!!!

Great Ocean road should be renamed 'Bouke St'. Only good for the scenery at 40-60KM in the 100 zone.

Yarra Glen to Yea. Plent of places to pass, very windy in spots that open out to good straight runs. Easy to keep to the speed limits too. Just do the drive BEFORE the wineries!

up around belgrave and emerald there are some ripper roads, heaps of great sweeping corners and fantastic scenery, one of my favourites is the ridge road that runs from emerald out to Pakenham-Gembrook rd.

well if ya in the country in wa i mgot a great stretch for bout 200ks i luv it esp wen its bout 9pm no cars other than me

get nice tite corners in teh hills and long sweepers on the flat with straights that go for an ave of 10-15 kms

no speeding but

If your in Newcastle driving to the top of mount Sugarloaf is good fun sitting in 2nd or 3rd. Great veiw of Newi up the top.

When you pass lakes entrance and orbost going towards NSW, it's is nice windy roads through a forest. I'm pretty sure it is still the princess highway there. Correct me if I am wrong. Very nice area, but just gotta be careful for the trucks.

Twice I have been through there drving. The second time went a hell of a lot quicker than 110km to get away from a semi. It just came behind me so quickly I thought I was finished.

Only annoying thing is there isn't much room to stop on the side of the road, to let the semi pass. But I think they have started changing that part of the princes.
