Default 9 speed ZF auto

To all the people saying 7 and 8 speed autos are a dumb idea, here's a 9 speed ZF for you.

...you think that's bad, reverse engineering it to build a competing 'box is a nightmare!

Boo!.

It would be nice to have more gears. The ZF 6 speed made the auto Falcon go from sluggish to spritely.

No need to worry as it's for fwd only. You will, however, be pleased to know there's an 8 speed in the pipeline.

It says with the 9sp Auto the car will be sitting at 1900rpm at 120km/h. My XR6 Turbo already does that with only the 6sp auto???

They should just call it CVT, as it may as well be.
Seems pointless to spend so much money on R&D for xxspeed gearboxes, when there must be better ways to gain economy, like WEIGHT !!!!

It will be great, if you are having a race, you can now change up as many gears as the guys in Fast & Furious !

Well, Top Gear will be able to do a story on this.

But what are 'Fifth Gear' going to do?

Just like that old Falcon Ute ad - 'Must have been stuck in 3rd'..... how fast can you go using a 9 speed tranny when stuck in 5th?

Just get CVT's working properly...

We test drove a Suzuki Kizashi Sport AWD before buying the G6E, and apart from a bit of a lack of power (turbo coming later this year apparently), it was pretty damn good. When being driven in "automatic" mode the shifts were seamless and in "manual" sport mode, the shifts between "gears" were pretty much instant.

A tougher version of a box like that in a Falcon would give the perfect ratio for any situation. Not really sure why they are continuing to stuff more and more actual gears inside an automatic...

Not many people like CVT's, they way they work makes people think it has a slipping clutch.

Some people claim having so many speeds is stupid as it will keep needing to change gears all the time, but if the shifts are imperceptable as they say, and it has the ability to skip more than 1 gear at a time I don't see the problem. Its all about fuel economy and reduced emissions these days, its easier and cheaper to replace and auto with one with more gears than it is to switch to lightweight materials such as carbonfibre etc. No need to crash test either, which would be required for light weight panels.

Even if they continue skipping only 1 gear at a time, going 2-4-6-8-9 will have it operate as a conventional 5 speed. The current 6 speeder already takes off from 2nd so that aspect is a non-issue.

The question i ask is do we really need it???

I dont see the point after a 6 speed in both manual and auto, plus the rebuild and service cost is abit rich................

James May argues we don't need vibrating 5-blade shaving razors either. if the 5th blade gets the closest shave, why can't you just get only the 5th blade and sod off all the rest?

I agree with the CVT comment. I can't stand them - and they are setup now to have set points in them anyway.
