Default Greatest sportsman of all time

I love in Melbourne and I am sick of hearing about Tiger Woods. He's just a golfer FFS! OK a good one, but certainly not the greatest. So many people have jumped on the bandwagon, it's crazy!

Surely Sir Don Bradman, Mohammed Ali, Michael Jordan, etc are better?

easily MJ - Tiger is good and both he and MJ share very similar personality traits - but MJ dominated everyone all the time - didnt matter who it was old school new school jordan came out on top

hard to say about ali - if he wasnt stripped of title? if he didnt spend 3-4 yrs away from sport maybe wouldve left an even bigger legacy - maybe on other hand being stripped of title was good for his career setting up fairytale comeback etc - maybe wouldnt have lasted as long if it didnt get stripped??

Thats the problem with golf your only against yourself and the elements, is it harder to dominate a sport when pitted against another eg in tennis boxing etc?

No mention of Schumacher, Doohan or Rossi? All absolutely dominated until they let someone else have a crack.

Woods would be very close... he's worked hard at what he does and it pays off. Anyone who plays (or trys to play) golf will know just how hard the game is.

He's won 71 tournaments, 14 of them being majors like a US Open.

If he's not the best sportsman now, he probably will be once he retires. Not to say that Jordan, Ali, Bradman etc aren't worthy of it too though

He's good but not the greatest sportsman. Greatest golfer he'd have a good argument for.

In my books no one will head Gentleman James Hird. After some of the injuries and set backs he had and the way he kept coming back with the calibre he did in his chosen sport is something special.

lol Hird...at least you didn't say Loyd I suppose. :

How about someone like Ben Graham or Darren Bennet?

Both had successful AFL and NFL careers.

My money would be on Michael Jordan though.

sampras and federer both have 14 grand slams to their names.

i don't think you can label 1 person the greatest.

Federer has 15

Tiger Woods will go down as the highest paid sportsman to have lived. He has already earned $1 billion and will likely finish with $3.5 Billion.

Very nice.

Yeah hard to choose from : Bradman, Woods, Ali, Rossi.

What about Kareem Abdul Jabar (with Jordan), he was just as good, if not better.
Roger Federer/Bjorn Borg has to be a close mention.
Lance Armstrong would have to be strongly recommended.
Pele?? Kelly Slater?? Phelps/Thorpedo?? Babe Ruth??

I think a lot of the elite sports person persona, is their personality in and out of the sport.

The way I see this list, is a sports person, that is clearly ahead of the field by double or nearly double, then it's worthy of the list.
(e.g Bradman's average 99.94, closest to his score would be around 55, he's nearly double).

Speaking about Abdul-Jabbar, he annouced he has cancer the other day, some chronic form of leukemia.

And speaking of cancer, Lance Armstrong would be right up there too. For a bloke to nearly lose his life to cancer then win 7 Tour de Frances in a row, retire for a few years then nearly win it again in his high 30's, is remarkable.

Our cousin met Tiger today...he is an upcoming golfer and it was the highlight of his life! Tiger Woods has been playing since he was 3??

Keep your eyes out for Matt Jager though....Up and coming young Australian talent. Very proud of you Matt

far too broad to select one athlete from one sport, and fixate them as number one overall. It's far easier to class it out, don bradman-cricket, michael Jordan-basketball, babe ruth-baseball, Ali-boxing, etc. The sports in the world now are too diverse to crown one king.

That title would have to go Jeff Wilson who represented his country at the top level in both rugby union and cricket...two very diverse sports. To play at the top level in one sport is fantastic but in two is remarkable

Second would be Carl Lewis for his achievements at the 1984 LA Olympics and beyond.

For those that think the title should go to Tiger Woods...then why not Roger Federer ?....Tiger is no better at golf than Roger is at tennis IMO

Bah. It's not even close. Bradman played in an era of uncovered wickets and still managed to amass nearly double the average of Tendulkar and scored more than half his runs in 1/3rd the time. Of current players, it's probably a coin toss between Tendulkar and Ponting.

Woods, possibly the best golfer ever - hard to call anyone the best sportsman ever, regardless of the sport. One thing I admire most about Woods is his class.
