Not a logical business move, for the same reason that every time we ring an Australian multinational company we get an Indian call centre employee on about $5 an hour.

Yeap, but in saying that remember Australia is AP's R&D Hub if the last few releases are anything to believe.

They will get better returns in India, for the market they are aiming at Ford would have to be mad to do that here.....

Two points:

1. I can't believe they left their run into India & China so late
2. It would have cost them triple the price to build a similar factory here with our assortment of red tape and taxes

Laugh as much as you like

Manufacturing is heading to that part of the world, and they'll be building Fiesta and other product for local consumption.

We could only dream of manufacturing investment like this in Australia.

Last decade ,Blundstone moved there Gumboot mfg operation over from Tassie, they stayed here in Vic for a couple of years then sent it all off to India.

Would Ford send Geelong & Broady both off to India.....................have a think about it...

Yes ,an Aussie Icon for sure!
The Gumboot operation was moved over here in the last months of 2000,i know as i was Site Operations Manager,Mfg.
They had to kill off the most expensive freight cost in the World ie;Bass Strait.Gumboot ops were seperate from the normal Boot style. There still in Hobart[i believe]

Manufacturing long gone. I dont buy their stuff any more. Their web site is very deceptive.

Please explain how the cars will be built worse? It'll be the same machines, measurements, everything - give or take some particular materials.

Also, your Focus isn't that great compared to it's generations competitors anyway...

Typical prejudice...

The local ABC radio had a discussion one night with a motoring editor and he rattled off a list of manufacturers who have, or who will very soon, set up shop manufacturing cars and bikes in India. It was amazing...everyone from Ford to Chrysler to prestige makers and everyone inbetween. Then the bike makers started, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, etc, even, amazingly, Harley Davidson!
Our sons little Suzuki Alto has a sticker on the door pillar near the latch that says it was made by some mob in India. Good little car too.

India is a booming place; educates her women, teaches english, has one quarter of the worlds computer programmers, and with 350 plus years of Brit administration behind her - will be an ally in the years ahead. Fifty to seventy years out - probably our key trading partner; Her population will expand-still, China's will be on the wane, demographic prediction I read anyhow.

Don't have a problem with India. Some Indian states still have speed derestriction (//). She has been busy funding new expressways, many thousands of kilometres of them since 2000.

They invested $1.8 billion about 5 years ago building the new Product Engineering offices and new facilities at the Proving Ground.

I bet they regret doing that now, since its all gone downhill since they did it.

The engineering side is doing very well, I wasn't reffering to that, but the manufacturing side of things which underpins pretty much the whole operation has been a different story lately, hopefully not too much longer and it will get better.

Wthout local manufacturing the whole engineering side starts to become shaky, they both need each other to survive surely.

And it was a $1.8 million investment in PG and PD facilities and E8 programs. The other programs weren't counted in that. If you can find a press release from the time it will show that.

^^what the falcon hasnt done too well (last couple of months ok) but from what I hear PD is still good for another 5-10 years easy. It was a smart move, Australia is just to much of a PIA for manufacturing.

I think you will find that Taxi operators tend to buy them at auction. Second hand.

In Rockhampton they have a lot of Prius taxis...trust me, you will have fun trying to fit four average sized blokes in one of them after a night out...especially when one is a huge Kiwi...I can still hear Nigel, squidged into one rear corner, saying loudly to the driver "What udiot thought it'd be a good idea to huve one of these little shutbuckets as a taxi?!"
