Hey guys just came across a problem this arvo, sounds like a belt is majorly slipping once i accelerate. I start the car and it idles fine, once i give it half throttle it sounds like a pig being run over by a truck : . It sounds like it coming from the water pump region of the engine bay so maybe that could narrow it down for some of you to diagnose the problem...any help would be appreciated as i have an autokhana on this weekend i'd love to attend (i have just recieved my new semi slicks so i want to run them )
I'm definately no mechanic so don't flame me for such a stupid question please...i will treat this as a learning experience. : PS: Its a 2ltr Pinto motor Thanks, Sam M. |

Hello Sam,
Definatly sounds like a belt is slipping most likely the belt running from your alternator (LH side of the block) to block. I had this same problem. It is very simple to fix, just loosen one bolt and re-tension it yourself by applying mild pressure and eliminate any slack. Whilst maintaining this pressure tighten up the bolt. SIMPLE : |

It could also be the water pump bearing, they rattle for a while then squeal
then sieze up completely.

thanks for the info guys, after i let the engine bay cool off a little while i noticed the alternator was a tad loose so i think your right on the money 'mk2_1979_escort'. I will have a crack tomorrow and that should be the end of it.
Thornspawn thanks for your advice too, i once had that problem on my gemini so i can see where you are coming from. THANKS AGAIN! : Sam M. |

If your having trouble with a bit of squeal even after tensioning (from the belt, not bering) then try rubing the edges of the belt with a bit of soap (im not kidding) which will stop it...
But make sure its tensioned properly ;)
