New Ford Puma

Had the chance to go on a test drive in the New Puma ST-Line.

To anyone wondering, it's sensational!! The value for money in terms of the fit and finish, along with features and ride quality is so impressive. A massive step up in all areas from our 2018 Escape titanium

Very very impressed and I wasn't expecting it.

They are raving about it in Europe. Don't know if it will catch on here though. It always comes down to dollars in this market.

Agreed on the weird stuff they eat, by all means.

However their speed limits on average are fortunately for them, much higher than ours.

Europe has the highest speed limits in the world.

I had an Ecosport as a loan car once, it wasn't very good. I would never buy a Puma or any of it's rivals but it's good to hear the Puma is good. Now Ford just has to show the buying public it's good.

They’re holding a “virtual tour” online where you can “desk drive” the all-new Puma. I saw it on Facebook. Should be interesting?

I hope so. We had a look at one yesterday. It's not a bad little rig, other than the front end styling, but the 1.0L motor is a little lacking. If the ST came out it might be my wifes next car.

Technically not the replacement. The ecosport is a cheap ****box. The puma is way more upmarket. The ecosport is still in production. It’s just ford australia choosing to switch to the puma, which is miles ahead of the ecosport.

2 different classes of car though.

I disagree, the Ecosport was an expensive ****box subcompact that started above the price of some compact CUVs.
In comparison, the Puma is worlds apart but as usual with Ford pricing, they really pig stick the customer and then
wonder why nothing sells. They're built in West Slobodoboka for 33 Ruckles and then sold here at more than top dollar.

Should have said cheaply made. In india. It should have been a budget suv. Cause it drove like one. As always ford got greedy with the australia tax. It was a third world market car, with a first world price. Never going to pull that off once the better competition arrived.

Puma is a first world market car and drives like it. Hopefully the drive away pricing deal from release will help it get traction here. If it does then we might get the ST version. We shouldn’t let Hyundai get in first with the N model Suv’s.

Starting with a good product is essential and maybe Puma can carry the premium price.
Once again, Ford is looking to that select group of buyers who will pay extra to get what
they want, many regular buyers would ignore it but, I would take it over a CX-3 or CX-30.

This fascination with putting motorcycle engines in cars I don't understand?
What about reliability ? longevity ? no cheaper to service ? It should have a 4 cylinder engine. As should the Focus. But the trend is to put motorcycle engines in cars. MG, VW, Renault are all doing it.
They might be okay in micro cars but small to medium size cars ? No.

Puma is a subcompact so a 1.0 Ecoboost is not out of place

Ford is challenging buyer perception of what adequate capacity should be,
a 1.0 litre turbocharged engine is small but the torque and horsepower is there.

The bottom line here is that the engine is more than adequate for intended buyers
and gives them diesel like fuel economy while using generally lower cost petrol.

Last night, I was harsh calling out Ford's pricing but I can't fault them on execution of Puma.

Well at least they have updated their webpage

But I'm still not sold. There's an awful lot of complexity, turbo, cylinder deactivation, dual-mass flywheel, and some kind of damping-clutch, in a 3-cylinder engine, just so that they can game the emissions standards.

Yet every "real-world" anecdote I've heard says that the fuel consumption increase stratospherically if you actually use the power the turbo provides.

If it's the same 1.0 litre engine as in the previous Fiesta S, then it should be a ripper. Drove one as a loan car a couple of years back. It was sensational.

I think csv8 was referring to the long term reliability of a small performance engine possibly punching just a bit above its weight. I have no idea how highly strung this engine is. It might be a ripper engine now, but how will it hold up after 10-15 years of spirited driving? Really well I hope.

I don't think it really matters, a 10-15 year old subcompact car is what it is,
well used and cheap to buy.

If you're asking how a turbo engine stands up long term, it depends whether the tuners
get to them and start turning up the boost. Anytime you have a turbo long term it's another
potential fail point but for owners inside 5,6,7 years it shouldn't be problematic.

Reality is In 10-15 years this car will probably be worthless. the trim will be worn the paint could be peeling, but id bet the engine would still be going strong. these engines are a reason to buy a Ford over its competitors

On reflection I was very harsh last night and I apologise to you and all of Ford's many hard working staff.
The price is an issue for me but the quality is there and I'm on record saying that I'd take Puma over CX-3.
