Could be the exhaust hitting on the Diff, or rear axle. Have you checked the clearance between the two?
Does it do it just when driving, or more so when you go over bumps etc?

once the car settles you have to jack it up again and retighten all the shock bolts / nuts.
if you dont it will clunk like anything chances are this is the problem |

It could be the bottom bolts on your shocks.. They dont tighten properly when you have the car jacked up.
What I did was jack the car up, sit the wheels on a brick (do this so you can get under it, and it keep the weight of the car on the shock bolts), then tighten up the bottom bolts for the shocks. Steve

I Retighten all the bolts, that solve the other anoying sound. THEN i desided to bounce on the car at the rear and sound something is hitting the body or something. Jack the car up, there's a new rubbing marks on the end bolts or the stapiliser bar. But the shouldent be it , it maybe the tailpipe its a loud uncomfordable knock ...... Its really annnnoying...........

Welcome to the world of lowered cars! I had to have my tailpipe modified when I lowered the Fairmont.

I'd say its either the exhaust on the diff or sway bar, or its your bottom bolts on the shocks.
I had this problem repeately, untill i learned that I had to tighten the bottom shock bolts with the car on the ground and not on the jack.

if it's the exhaust hitting the diff, get a big rubber exhaust mount (the round ones) and some metal cable ties and tie it to the axle where the exhaust hits. Presto, no more knocking sound.

I had a knocking sound in mine when it was superlow at the rear. I found that when i replaced the shocks, the sound went away, and then came back once the new shocks became buggered again after about a month. Anyone got other suggestions other than exhaust? (I torqued mine up on the ground as said in the workshop manual)

Glad to see it worked. That noise drove me insane for months. After removing and reinstalling my shocks, it went away for a couple of days then came back. Once i learned about tightening them on the ground, problem solvered.

I never knew about this tightening the shocks on the grond business. Might have to give it a go and see if it fixes the knocking sound coming from mine.

I know its a old thread but its the exhaust hitting the diff's control arms because i have this issue aswell and you just learn to live with it even though i have new exhaust mounts on
