Default Ford TX5 - idles rough

Hi all

I hope you guys (& girls) can help. My 1993 Ford TX5 is a manual, with about 180000km's on the clock.

When I start my car, it starts fine but idles quite rough. Not that the car is shaking, but I can feel and see on the gear leaver how it vibrated. I can't remember it ever doing that, until I got a refurbished distributor.

I've taken it to some Ford mechanics and some has said that the "HT/HD leads" might have to be replaced.

Question is, is that the problem? I know I'll never know until I actually replace them, but what else could be causing the gear lever to vibrate so much? It never was so bad since I got that other refurbished distributor.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

at night in the dark lift the bonnet and run the motor
look for arcing of the leads /cap /coil

With "arcing of the leads /cap /coil", do you mean like sparks or something? I'm not quite up to date with the terms.

Is taking it back to whoever did the distributor an option? Tell them it has been idling rough since they did the work and ask them nicely to have a quick look to make sure they didn't miss something during the job.

HT leads have a resistance of about 15K-ohms per metre. Check this with a multimeter. Bad leads usually go high resistance, so anything more than 20-30K-ohms per metre should be replaced. Bad HT leads give poor fuel economy, rough idle and/or off-idle hesitation and can cause failures in other parts of the ignition system.

I'm afraid there's no option for me to take it back. First mistake I made, was putting in a refurbished distributor..

I don't think you will find that the distributor is the problem - especially as the car does actually start & run.
I'd be checking that the timing was set correctly when doing the distributor install & that your plug leads aren't breaking down (they get very brittle internally with age). New plug leads shouldn't be too many $$$
