Smile Falcon Engine to Power Jaguar...

Turbo 2.0-litre, supercharged V6 join British marque's chase for fuel economy.

Jaguar, the luxury car marque once known almost exclusively for its silky six-cylinder engines and growly V8s, has announced it will add a version of the Ford Falcon four-cylinder petrol engine to its line-up.

The company has also revealed it will fit a supercharger to its 3.0-litre V6 for an upcoming mid-life refresh of both its XF and aluminium-bodied XJ models that will include stop-start technology to switch off the engine while stopped in traffic.

Both the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and the V6 will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that will be a standard feature across the Jaguar car range.

Advertisement: Story continues below
Adding the supercharger in between the banks of the V6 appears to have resulted in the demise of the normally aspirated 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, although buyers can still choose between the existing 2.2-litre turbo diesel four cylinder, or 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 engines in various states of tune, or the normally aspirated or supercharged 5.0-litre V8.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine fitted to the XF saloon will produce 177kW of power and 340Nm of torque — slightly less than the figures produced by the version of the in-line four used in the Ford Falcon — while officially using only 8.9L/100km on the European cycle, and producing 207g/km CO2. Again, this compares with the Falcon’s 8.1L/100km and 192g/km CO2 for the base-model XT and 8.5L/100km and 201g/km CO2 for the more upmarket G6 models.

Also available in the bigger XJ, the 2.0-litre engine will officially sip 9.3L/100km with emissions capped at 216g/km.

The supercharged V6, however, produces a much healthier 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque from fairly high in the rev range, compared with 175kW/293Nm for the atmo engine it replaces.

As well as the performance gain, the supercharged V6 cuts 1.1L/100km from the fuel use of both the XF and XJ, which falls to 9.4L/100km and 224g/km CO2 for both versions.

The 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder will now come in two states of tune, offering either 120kW/400Nm or in its higher state of tune, 147kW/450Nm. In the XF, fuel economy is rated at 5.4L/100km, although if you want to drop to less-showy 17-inch wheels it falls to 5.1L/100km.

"The diesel V6 is still offered with either 177kW of power or 202kW in its higher state of tune. Tweaks to its set-up, though, cut fuel use back from 6.3L/100km to a flat 6.0L/100km in the saloon."

The 5.0-litre V8 also becomes more economical, with the normally aspirated version making fuel use gains of about 8 per cent, while the supercharged version improves by about 6 per cent. Both now officially use only 11.3L/100km, with emissions capped at 268g/km.

The XJ limousine comes in for some extra tweaking, too, with Jaguar announcing it has revised the big car’s suspension tuning to offer ‘‘enhanced ride isolation and occupant comfort on all road surfaces, with no impact on the model’s acclaimed dynamic ability’’.

The luxury brand has also said it will offer ‘‘ultra-premium’’ sound systems in its cars developed by British sound specialist Meridian, with power outputs of up to 825 Watts.

NA 3.0 was a weezy puny thing so supercharging that's a good move. As for dropping in the ecoboost motor, and putting a 2.0 in an XJ, go figure, especially with it using circa 9L/100 km's. Why would you bother when the diesel's are rated at 6L/100 km's ?

Supercharged V8's using only 11.3 L/100 km's is remarkable.

technically, it isn't a falcon engine, so the title is wrong. its ford's 2L ecoboost, which the falcon also happens to use.

My economy went from 11.9l to 14.5l when I went from factory 18s to 20's.

Not brilliant, if I'm honest.

Ford builds the diesel engines for Jaguar and Land Rover. V6 comes from Dagenham and V8 comes from Chihuahua.

Jag and LR need the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost (to replace the 3.0 S/C) and may as well just use Ford's 5.0 V8. EcoBoost that instead of supercharging it.

My Dad worked as a mechanic at a Jag dealership in the late seventies / early eighties ... V12 Jag owners quite often had to walk reasonable distances to call for roadside assist.

That's what happens when the local "mechanics" grow up working on 186's and 202's, they no idea about anything complex and how to understand fix/adjust them.

I remember the V8's following home the V12 at Bathurst.....

.
perhaps you should get some experience working on some of the early pommy stuff before making blanket statements like that.
my recollection of their reputation back in those days was they where famous for oil leaks particularly in the 6 cylander ,the v12`s had ridiculous service times, 16 hours given to adjust tappets for example, the consensus was they where over engineered hos, part of the reason sbc became a popular engine swap, the early land rover also had that stigma,
but the jags where nice to drive though .

I got excited and thought it was the straight six. That engine would be worthy of the Jaguar brand.

Of course, Clarkson would set up an altar to it, and hail it as brilliant 'British' engineering.

Not unexpected, its beyond Jaguar to design and build its own engines, it would cost billions and then some, they are too small.

When you have the likes of Toyota and BMW swapping donks [small diesel for hybrids] then what Jag done is realistic and today perhaps even considered normal and cost effective

Besides who cares who made the engine and where it came from, as long as it goes well, quiet and frugal/clean, it could come from your worst enemy.

"WE" could sell them some nice 4L six with/without turbo if they are interested?

The XF Jag is my favorite sedan on the planet, make the 3-stooges from Gemanyy look so common and classless

We should care, because it a postive light for the falcon and ford.

"Falcon engine powers Jag"

Whilst a liberal truth, it's creating more awareness of the Falcon and its engine, and expending its credentials.

The falcon has the same engine as a luxury car? you bet!

Up until recently, Jaguar was looked down at and with scorn, no respect or class to it [unless your in UK]

In fact if Tata did'nt buy them [they where only interested in L/Rover, they got it thrown in as a job lot] they would have most likely gone like SAAB and shut shop.

Thank God the Indians punt has paid off, one of Ratan's better investments, i really like the Jaguar XF, she is one sexy mother, really made FoMoCo look silly and the billions they wasted while owning it.

WTF ? Jaguar fell into the doldrums in the final yeras of BL ownership due to lack of investment , passionless corporate decision makers ( NOT Sir William Lyons ) calling the shots and a lazy indolent unionised workforce who just didn't give a Flying XXXX. Prior to that they only won Le Mans 4 times ( with a slightly modified road car which did 170 M.P.H. in the 50's ) as well as numerous other sports car races .

I'm with you. I have a serious hankering for a supercharged XFR and it hasn't gone away with the purcahse of my Sc Gt-P like I was hoping it would.

Now that its coming with the ZF 8 speed transmission and uses only 11.3 litres per 100 km's for a car making 375 kw's and 625 nm's and rumoured to soon come with the higher spec version of that engine 404 kw's and 680 nm's all that's left to decide is the colour and which bank I rob
