Ok guys the handling and braking side of the vehicle is sorted.
The next mods are to help the performance side of things. I am thinking that at 175klms the coil pack has prob seen its day. In saying that what brand and even better what part number as well? She has a I6 VCT in her. |

I had to replace my coil pack not long ago, just a standard jobbie sent over from carbitz, but it cost me $120 (trade price) so id expect that the bigger name brands would be around the $150 mark (again trade price). while your at it, go for ICE pro series leads and NGK plugs (ZGR6B11). when you change the pack, there are 3 7mm bolts holding it down, one has an earth wire underneath the pack. dont forget to undo the plug before you undo the bolts. can be easier to remove the pack from under the car. but i found it ok to do just removing the airbox/snorkle and ducting so i could access it all from above. can be difficult at times, but doable.

As far as I know nobody makes an aftermarket version of these like what MSD do for V8 ones, youre best of just getting a new genuine one.

Now that I didn't want to here. Grrr....
Will have to do some research on that one. Motocraft parts are usually not the best. |

you can get aftermarket mustang v6 ones from the states. explorer v6 ones are also the same, they have the same plug as an au1, the only thing you have to do is change a couple of the leads around because the firing order is set up slightly differently

I bought an aftermarket one from Supercheap auto for $106 incl freight (had to be ordered in, took two days). Works a treat.

Just an update for ya guys.
I have searched high and low but to no avail. There is nothing out there in the way of an after market performance coil pack for an I6. So I guess the crappy genuine one it is in this case. Thanks anyways guys. |

I got a genuine one from Ford yesterday and replaced it yesterday as well, like au2sw says, just remove the whole air intake system( everything before the throttle body) and do it from above. Definatly improved my car it now idles, and revs cleaner and smoother and changing the coil pack also fixed the annoying problem of my tacho jumping as it got reved past 2000rpm

What you mean the hard way, i left the intake manifold on and put my arm/hand between it and the block, nice and hot too, or under the throttle body, plus its only 5 little bolts and three screws

I think the problem would be in the feed back circuit to the computer and what voltage/current it sends back. There was someone a while back who started to play with explorer coils. Cheers

Wouldnt the firing order be controlled by the ECU? Worse comes to worse you can use an ignition controller like the DIS4 system and set it up that way, MSDs put out higher voltage than what the standard ford coils do too.

The coil firing order is controlled by the ECU, it's just a matter of correct pairing of leads to get the right cylinder firing order in a wasted-spark system like this.
BTW bodes-sh, I've forgotten, was the Explorer coilpack like the EF/AU1 unit or the AU2/3 one?

Those are aftermarket Commodore coils. As I said earlier they don't work "out of the box" in a Falcon and will need wiring up by someone who knows what they are doing.l
