Default Census 2011

Hi all,

Did everyone here do the census? Seems like a waste of time its not like things change according to the census anyways. E.g public transport etc.

How compulsory is it? And how do they know how accurate the information is?

Had an email about the "optional" religion part.

Basically the email said to ensure I ticked a "Christian" box.

The reasoning being that if we all ignored it, whilst "Muslims" ticked their religion then there'd be mosques sprouting up all over the place, rather than "unrequired" churches?

Lots of FUD being spread from the Christian Lobby groups on this. Governments don't build churches anyway.

Its worth doing, you cant move forward if you dont know where you sit now. Whether its 100% accurate or not is debatable, but you have to use something as a tool.

Actually, was told by my delivery woman that if I did it online I could do it prior to Aug 9 pending no-one left or joined the household.

And I'd hate the web traffic if I did do it that night.

They WOULD actually change - for example if the census of a certain suburb showed that there was now a lot more children living there than the last census, that data would be taken into account when deciding on the placement of a new school or school bus routes.

It's a shame that people don't care about doing something like this, same as voting. If people can't be bothered being sensible about it (eg donkey voting)then I believe that you have no right to complain about the government. (This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, just my 2c).

So, hypothetically, what would you do if you were going out that night fishing/boating??
For arguments sake, this hypothetical person lives alone, heads out after work on his or a mates boat and is out all nite...
Theres no one at the house and the person isnt sleeping somewhere else etc..

Personally, I view the whole census thing as another waste of time, just like voting for elections. Census may acheive some results in general demographics etc over time when governments can be bothered getting off their asses and cant find any more taxes to rape us with..
And voting in elections is a total waste of time and a PIA. No matter who you vote for, you will still end up with some stooge who is only in it for themselves.

If the government needs a census done every x number of years to know there is inadequate public transport, not enough doctors etc than we all got a problem. Another band aid solution such as carbon tax.

thanks for the input fellas.

I dont know if you still need to know the answer but Yes you can start the online census then stop and save your progress and come back to it later. Also the bonuses of the ecensus are 1; the collector will not return to your house and 2; the ecensus actually uses information that you enter in previous answered questions and automatically blocks questions that wont apply to you.

For the people whinging, it may be a pain to do but it only happens once every 5 years and if you dont do the census you can be fined $110 for every day after the 9th that you fail to complete the census.

If anyone has questions about the delivery, collection or the completing of the census just ask and I will try answer your questions because I am one of many people who are doing the delivery and collection of the census material.

Do not ask about what the Australian bureau of statistics does after it get all the info. All I do know is that stuff like your name and dob are only used to make sure everyone completes the forms and no other organisation gov or private is able to get your name.

The poor atitude towards is by some is astounding... but i guess normal.

How else does a government know how many people there are in certain areas etc? The age of the population? how many babies/ toddlers/ teens/ old age people etc? How does it work out which town has grown or gotten smaller?

Its a snap shot of the country...

And for the love of god... some people on here cant help turning it into a political thread... the Census IS NOT A POLITICAL PARTY thing and has NOTHING to do with the government of the day.
It is conducted by the Bureau of statistics... and is not connected to any political party.

Typically the info takes nearly 2yrs to collate and is held every 5yrs since the dawn of federation...

Yeah, but who is empowered to enact upon or legislate for any possible changes the info does provide?
Its conducted by the Beauro of Statistics, a government organisation... Hello..

HELLO ... the Labour party DOESNT RUN IT.... they are public servants.
When the government changes the ABS doesnt sack everyone... or any other public service. People on here are whinging about nothing.

There were 2 census periods under Howard... was it an issue then?

The statistics are released to the public and anyone can access it.

A hundred years of Census.. wow such a big issue isnt it?
Must be another commie plot im sure.

Just so people are aware...

I am a regional director of a non government youth organisation. We NEED this data in order to tailor appropriate services to certain areas. For example... the area in which I live has a high proportion of low income earners with children of primary and secondary ages. The area also has a moderate amount of very high income earning families with a small percentage of those with school aged children. The area has no youth center and a relitively poor private medical coverage... etc

Point is... no support organisation worth their salt wouldnt do research like this to support a region. You would be a moron if you just went in without knowing what the area requires.

The only mostly reliable souce to obtain this info would be... drum roll please is the beuro of stats... and they use "The Census".

It may or may not be useful directly to you... but I guarentee that people in your area need you and anyone else out there that see this as a "waste of time" to fill it in appropriately. So next time your car is vandelised or you cant get a support service; suck it up Princess because you brought it on yourself.

Well, not me.

The census chick turned up yesterday to deliver our form. I can’t say that I took a lot of notice about what she was saying, I was too busy staring at her… ahhhh census bags.

I’ll get the missus to fill it out. I’m not going to do it online because if we do, the census chick doesn’t need to come back.

We need to Censor your thoughts about the Census chick

You must have been lucky, we had a Sasquatch deliver ours, and I'm not joking, he looked like Grizzly Adams without the make up. I have a sneaking suspicion that his Census form carry bag could have been doubling as a beer chiller as well
