How much are they?
Piston slap? Oil....LOL Every car has issues, some just worse than others. If you want it; get it, either way you will be going quicker than the beasty laser! Also an odd question to be asking on a Fordforum...LOL

I ask of a Ford forum because you guys will be brutally honest about a Holden.
Also the badge is not a reason not to buy it. :P

I would recommend a Ford Laser... they are awesome...
Would it be worth waiting, and saving for a BA XR8? or even Orion?

because the VXSS is the new VN5lita bro!
every little 20 yearold halfbrained apprentice is getting big loans and buying them, they sound good but are essentually just an opel senator B, i.e. a 15 yearold chassis from germany. the price is low for a reason, they are what used to be a 'respectable car' but VN's all over the world are dying and all the methed up bogans are replacing there fully sick 5 litas with VXSSes, you dont wanna be like that do ya??

VX SS, problems are well documented so you know what to look for when buying, theres a weatlth of knowledge on tuning and heaps of bolt ons, excellent fuel economy, better manual box AU XR8, will most likely have better quality than the commo and owned moreso by an enthusiast than a hoon, better auto box Overall dollar for dollar you spend on mods you will make more power with the LS1. I'm not sure which one I'd choose, most likely the VX due to its potential, better manual box and the AU's awkward styling. |

So how much are these things? I assume a bit cheaper than the Ford equivalent? An AU3 XR8 220 with a rebel kit would be nice. But again, NFI how $$$ they are either. Better yet get a T1 or T2!

If you want to get an idea of the excitement mentioning a Holden on AFF creates, see this thread -> http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=112754 :
As others have mentioned, early GEN III engines had oil problems. See this article for more on the problem http://www.idavette.net/hib/02ls6/page5.htm You need to have the engine compression checked and get to see the vehicles service history. Looking through the LS1 forum would also give you good background on the issues with these engines. |

Other than remote cases of oil and piston slapping and tyre wear due to irs, there realy isnt much else as to not get it. looks better than the AU XR8 IMO, and also an extra .7L advantage. and low fuel consumption is good too. throw in CAI, extractors, exhaust, you'l have a great car

if its value for money or value for power your after then the ba xr6 turbo at the auctions can be picked up for about $16,000.spend another $1,500 on aps kit and its good buy to the ss.at the moment you would be buying a current shape model rather than an old or previuos model ....unless you just must have a v8 his should solve your problem.for not much more money you will smoke porshe and ferraris from the lights if you wish... : :

Do you have 4 large adults you regularly need to carry around? Otherwise I can think of a crapola load of performance cars I would rather own for the money.

Early XR6T's are the best bang for your buck performance car getting around ATM. You'd be better of to spend a bit more and get a XR6T over a VX SS IMO.

I think the VX models are starting to look very outdated, if i was to buy commodore then minimum for me would be a VY as these can be made to look quite tough with appropriate HSV kit fitted
Does it have to be a V8? If not look into XR6T as these with the slightest of mods will leave the GenIII behind, even a LOT of diehard holden fans are crossing over to these cars as they can see there merits If you DEFINATELY want a V8 then i see 2 options really Yes the GenIII is good motor so either buy one of these but only in VY upwards model as others looking too long in teeth or for similar money (maybe couple k more) find an AU III TE or TS50 with the 5.6 stroker motor, these limited edition Tickfords will give you the BEST resale value when you go to sell also as they will not come down in value anywhere in the near distant future |

OK, DON"T BUY A COMMODORE!!!!! There you go
Get a Ford if you want a nice Aussie car or get a Japanese (other than a Camry!) or German car if you want your ride to last more than 2 years! :P |

Get a WH Statesman instead of the VX if you must go the 5.7.
Leather trim, electric everything and it wont look like every 2nd holden on the road.

I would not talk you out of it. One of my customers is selling his monaro at the moment and the thought crossed my mind as well. The only thing is my good friend who has an accounting firm sold his ss because the petrol consumption was leading him to sell his kidney to keep paying for it.

Auto or manual. Personally I think a GenIII powered Calais would be better, if your thinking auto.
VT/VX/VY/VZ SSs are a dime a dozen nowadays. So you wouldn't have any sort of exclusivity.

Thanks for the posts, guys.
I'm not a Ford man nor a Holden man. I'm really not biased on make, only model. The AU's can look nice but i'm not a huge fan of them. If it went looks i'd take the VX over the AU. I also don't see that many AUXR8220's going around, not around the same price range. I'd love an XR6T, chances are i'd take one in a second over a VX SS but they're not in the same price range. I've heard some horror stories with people buying at auction where you might be able to get them around the same price. V8 or V6, not fussed. As long as it pulls the numbers i'm happy. Fuel doesn't bother me either. Though of course if they're known guzzlers (like the standard 5L V8 Commo engine) i'll steer clear, but the 5.7L isn't. I post here because if there is a good enough reason to not buy the VX SS I wouldn't, simple as that. As much as it's the most probable car i'll buy next it's not like I have my heart dead set on that model. I'm not buying right this second either. I'm taking my time be it six or twelve months when i've done my research and found something special is when i'll lay the money down. Perhaps the XR6T will come down that extra bit in that time to be comparable with the current SS? Cheers for any future posts!

I say test drive a few different makes/models. See which feels the most comfortable for you and one that's within your budget. Don't limit yourself to just Holden or Ford either. And someone mentioned the WH Statesman. I agree. Consider a WH. A mate of mine has one and I've driven it alot. It is (for me) one of the most comfortable cars to be in and to drive. It's a car that I would seriously consider purchasing next if I move back to Holden. I also think a WH would break you away from the rest of the pack. WH is not as common a sight on the road as the VN/VP/VT/VX/VY are. Know what I mean... Krissy.
