I will not contribute as yet but will be paying close attention.

Wife got me a HTC (Desire HD??? the one with the 4.3" screen) for my birthday yesterday...

'Apps'... are all new to me lol. As is a 'phone' with no buttons (and no instruction manual)

Hmmm will spend this weekend doing a lot of trial and error ;) I have never seen so many options on a phone!

Apparently, it also can make and receive calls as well...

Have you tried his latest Gingerbread ROM? Its pretty good. Just waiting for him to include the new sense..was using it on another GB rom but it was battery hungry and froze a bit.

As of yet no, I've been instead toying around with some 'root' programs I downloaded en-mass and haven't managed to fry the CPU 'yet', but my battery hates me

HTC Desire

A few I have that I don't think are mentioned.

Skype. Free.
Mini info. Turns ion and off hardware components like Bluetooth, airplane mode etc in one simple widget. Free
Words with friends. Scrabble game. Free
Robo defence. Warning, stupidly addictive if you like command and conquer. Like a stripped down version of c&c. Free.
Airborn free. Your phone becomes a mouse and keyboard if you download a wireless server for a PC with Bluetooth. free and useful.

Thatll do.

If you have an LED flash, get one of the flashlight apps. The one we have looks like a maglight, with 3 stage brightness. Cant remember what its called, might have come already installed.

Opera Mini

Calendar hooked up to google (gmail) calendar. Set up appointments etc on the PC with gmail calendar, and sync with the phone.

My Mrs loves the "OI Shopping" list. Enter an item, check it off when you put it in the trolley, clear the ones youve checked off leaving only whats still to get. Once youve entered an item it stays in a list for next time, you just select it next time, no need to re-enter those items.

My sons Galaxy S doesnt have an LED so it uses the screen for a torch, can be white, red, or flashing red, theres one with red and blue flashers with siren.

Double twist, its like iTunes for android. Create playlists etc on the PC to sync with phone. If you have a USB cable, its free, apparently if you want to use 'airsync' you have to buy it.

I have this setup for work. Brilliant to use with Google and I can be anywhere anytime and still send emails as if I was in front of the computer.

One that I have & love on my Desire is "More Icons Widget"

Allows me to have 16 shortcuts to various apps along the bottom of my homescreen, when without this only four shortcuts would fit.

Also one called Credit Usage Meter - designed for people on cap plans. Basically tell the app the day each month your cycle resets (ie 2nd of each month); how much is included in your cap; how much each call block & sms and everything costs - and it will keep a tally of how much you've spent over the month and warn you if you start getting near the limit your cap includes. This one isn't as important to me now that I only use approx half of my included calls/sms etc each month but for those who push it, can be handy.

I do not have an android phone (I have iphone) but be wary of tuneine radion if you are using the 3G network to stream. I watched it download a mb faster than a minute. After 1hr it had gone through 70mb and that was any station I listened to.

Bought this one after reading on here, it's unreal. The only weather source information directly from BoM. Very accurate.

Default Re: Android Apps

Going to a HTC Desire HD from a Nokia N95 takes a bit of getting used to. So, can I be the first to ask the question that no one else is brave enough too?

What is the difference between an App and a Widget?

One has 6 legs.

All widgets are apps, but not all apps are widgets. A widget is always running, an app requires you to run it by clicking an icon etc (obviously you can switch a widget off too). I kind of think of widgets like a batch file or shortcut or similar which auto function like weather updates. Time saving apps, as in no need to go to menus and find the icon and click it do whatever it is the app does. If the widget is running it just keeps doing what it does in the background, and maybe displaying data..

Something like that anyway.

Or in auto speak, a widget is the auto parking feature of some cars. While an app is just a steering wheel, you got to do it yourself everytime you want it done.
