Default Strange Ticking Noise - Audio Included

Hi Everyone,

I have recently noticed a strange ticking / clicking noise which sounds like its coming from the passenger side, possibly somewhere near the headlights. During a recent service a mechanic told me that he thought it could be a spark arcing somewhere, but said that the car was not missing.

I have included a couple of photos of the engine bay to show where I believe the sound is coming from, and also an audio file here. It is a bit hard to hear for the first half of the audio as the bonnet was open, however the second half of the audio is with the bonnet shut and the sound is a lot more clear.

While taking this audio file I started the car from cold and the noise was not present, but after about 5 min at idle it started. Any ideas?

it`s funny how sound files sound so much worse than the real thing, gee i dunno mate, to me it sounds like it`s coming form inside the engine, only other thing i can think of is the aircon clutch...... i don`t know, , i have an idea, maybe you could take the belt off and listen to it run without the ancilleries while hot momentarily(remembering no water pump working) to see if the noise is still there, any lost spanners rattling around it the air filter area?

Charcoal canister, almost every AU V8 does it. Can be solved somewhat by wrapping the canister itself in a rag or something similar.

Search is your best friend on this topic. Covered many times. "Purge Canister Solenoid" is the noise, easily fixed too. There is nothing wrong with it as its doing its job but its resting against the inner guard and makes an amplified noise. Mine has had a car wash sponge wrapped around it with 2 cable ties since 2002.

Thanks guys. Sounds like it is the charcoal / purge canister solenoid. I will check it out tomorrow when there is a bit of light and see if I can see anything.
