G'day all,
Got a problem with my EB2 (4.0 6 MPEFi Auto Sedan) in that downshifts have become very jerky. Particularly a downshift from 2 to 1 on just enough throttle to cause a downshift will cause it to spin the wheels. Taking away from the lights the revs will hit 3k unchecked and suddenly engage first, lighting up the rear tyres. It's a bit of fun, but pretty dangerous - I forgot to tell a mate the other day when I lent her the car and she ended up spinning it :( I read a bit about banding in the haynes book - is it likely this that needs adjusting, or is there probably something more sinister(costly) amiss? get a service and hope its fixable cheaply as a full rebuild will cost around $2000

I have killed two autos, once something goes amiss its never going to be the same again unless u go for a full reco which is very $$$

Id say your S5 solonoid would be gone, dead, etc
our XR wagon did the same thing, when i took off it changed soo hard you use to think it was majorly shiftkitted. Also use to do chirpies everywhere :P I took it for a service and was told the S5 was ИИИИed. Was quoted $440 to fit a new one and a full service. instead I fitted my spare auto that had been reco'd about 2yrs ago for $350. Now I have to find another auto or T5 for my car :P

If the S5 Solonoid is rooted wouldnt it revert to limp home mode?

would an s5 solenoid allow it to rev to 3 grand though??? Id be more inclined to a slipping stall??

yes the bands are adjustable on all btr transmissions,i know a bloke that built them,other wise there'd be alot of used and reco'd units being sold,,a full reco unit is around the 1300 to 2000 mark,,used one are ok so long as they are from a younger car,,ie instead of putting le85 back in an ea put the next one up in and so on...

Thanks all. Have changed the fluid about 5k ago, levels are fine. Box has only done 170k, and strangely seems to have sorted itself out after a particularly lumpy shift yesterday - leading me to think it's probably a corroded electrical connection, poss on this s5 solenoid mentioned above. Will get it up in the air next w/e and see what I can find in the way of dubious electrics.
