Afternoon all,
I'm a new member. I am 19 years old and currently have a EF 1994 Falcon with 190000k's on it. It's time for a new car. I've driven a turbo skyline during my time and I fell in love but knew it would be a no no on my QLD P plates. So it's come down to the time where I'm looking at a new car. The XR6 manual 2012 FG MKII is an awesome car, the clutch will take me a good week or two to get used to coming from a cable old school POS clutch. But I'm stuck... The sedan is bigger, better for what I will be using it for and overall seems to have a great feel. But... the IRS will basically stop me having any fun around corners. Safely may I add. I live in a regional town with stuff all traffic at times. I wouldn't endanger others on the road just myself. Anyways with the IRS it could make it hard to have fun, plus the traction control as well. The ute on the other hand has a much lighter rear end and no IRS it uses a different setup. But no 2 back seats and I play taxi a lot at this age and for the future it would be better. I need thoughts and ideas. The work it will have done to it is a new Xforce 2.5" exhaust, new CAI, pacemaker headers if possible and new wheels down the track. Thanks for any suggestions. |

utes hold value better than sedans....
I think the ute has a heavier rear end than the sedan, thats why its heavier. just it doesnt hold the road as well on midcorner bumps etc as it has no IRS. However they sure grip well from a standstill! Also I think an LSD is not an option on the sedan, but is on the ute? Thats a biggie! Last edited by EDManual; 13-04-2012 at 04:08 PM. |

Also I can't say I know enough about cars for all the little things but I'm trying. The skyline was a massive learning curve. Also if it helps I've never been done for a fine, accident etc etc |

Thanks guys.
I forgot to add that, if I chose to resell it at a later date a manual ute is going to have much better resale value then the manual sedan. But I just have the feeling down the track even with possibly more fun and performance I would feel limited by just having one seat (excluding me). And I've also looked at used and I would love one of the BF V8's but alas I'm stuck because of my license. |

Im pretty sure I read with the FG MKII upgrade that the XR6 utes now come with LSD standard.
I'm not you, but if I was... Ute all day, everyday. |

I know where your coming from - I'm in a similar situation. I'll be leasing a new car early next year, and was all settled on an XR6 Turbo ute. But, after over 10 years with a panel van and only 2 seats, I'm really feeling the need for a 4 seater. But a sedan isn't an option for me so I'm tossing up between a Commodore SS wagon, or the Ute.
The Commodore is a V8, 5 seater, IRS, and look fantastic (all good points IMO (I dont care about doing burnouts like the OP)) Why is it then I wonder, that I still really want the (Ford) ute... As for the OP, do you have any friends who could take over the taxi duties? Maybe you could start enjoying being the passenger for once. |

The SS commodore would have been my choice if I wasn't on restricted.
And to be fair I'm not interested on wasting my tyres but I would like to feel like I'm having fun when I drive it. I was also looking at the VE SV6 2012 commodore and it looks a little more sportier but less torque but I haven't driven one yet so that could be the big difference but again it has the IRS as well which makes corners boring sadly. I do have friends who could do it, I work 2 jobs and one of them on the weekends finishes at 6am after working all day >.> and I end driving 4 people home without fail and feel bad if I don't. But that shouldn't be swaying my choice. The other thing with the Ute is when I say want to do work on it etc it will look better with it. But where I live it's a mining town and there so many utes ford / holden it just feels way way to common. Debating it out is doing it good |

Buy the new car but why don't you keep the EF for paddock bashing and drifting (on dirt) duties, (heaps of fun without the worry about wrecking it) ?
Either car you mention are not that good for going sideways. The ute should have a stronger resale. PS Not to sound like grandma but if you do crash into a tree, just remember that the emergency services people get affected by it (plus your family and friends). But when I was your age I didn't care about that either

buying a ute is the perfect way to get out of those taxi duties without guilt!! Golden opportunity I reckon!
Yeah I am reasonably keen on the SS Commodore, but they are a lot more expensive than an XR6T ute, particularly as I have access to Ford Employee pricing. But, I woudn't drive a V6 Commodore if it was given to me. |

Seriously.... You say the sedan fits your needs much more than a ute, but you want a ute to slide around corners????

I personally couldn't live with a 2 door car so it would be the sedan for me.

I now have a SZ Territory for the passenger duties. Great car.
But a day does not go by that I don't think of adding an XR6 ute to the "fleet" (thinks - OK, so 3 cars isn't exactly a fleet!). I am working up the "business case" to put to SWMBO a little later in the year!!

I do know what happens when I drive the car like I do. That's why I don't do it when it's wet, busy on the roads, and / or when someone else is in the car with me. Yes accidents happen but none the less I'm sure you all went through your hooning stages.
That's another bonus, the Ute has the better warranty as well but if it was a 4 door ute that would be my choice right there. It would be a golden way to get out of taxi as well :P At the moment they are quoting me 34990 for the sedan and 33990 for the ute. Either way not much difference there. When I did test drive the sedan it was crazy how little road noise there was, how nice it was to have aircon and windows that worked. The speakers are no match for my car however but to be expected. Such a hard choice and something that I would expect to live with for at least the next 5 years. |

Live with what you got, get off P's then get a turbo/v8. Turbo/v8 go the sedan.

Go the XR6 Ute if you're buying now. Otherwise wait for the XR6T.
I agree with the others about the EF and using it for a basher?!

I know your young, but the only reason I can see you wanting a ute for, is that you can go sideways on roads.
Every other thing you have said, you need a sedan for. I agree 2 weeks and you will have smacked it on a pot hole or ditch. I know because I used to be the same at your age. |

Im in oar.....
If this was Hulk BA that made this thread there would be just enough time to put crap on him before one of the mods decided to close it. Yet this guy in all his wisdom happily states his intentions of the ute on public roads yet we are giving him Warranty and IRS info. Double standards much???
