Sorry mate, I just got up, and what I read indicated he was alive and out of significant danger. I do wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

It appears he has a brain injury. That seems to be the most common injury in high speed motorsport crashes these days. The driver is protected from almost everthing - e.g. broken bones and burns are very rare injuries compared to three decades ago. However there is no way from stopping the brain from being belted against the inside of the skull. Hope for his sake that he fully recovers from this accident.

Because it's better than an appointment with the coroner.

Top Gear presenter in serious crash

9.45am Thursday September 21, 2006

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the British television programme.

The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Leeds which has a special neurological unit.

Hammond was reported to be travelling at around 450 kilometres an hour while attempting to break a land-speed record.

He had been filming at a former Royal Air Force base.

Hammond was unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene, but reportedly regained consciousness at the hospital.
Hope he is ok

TV host seriously hurt in crash

The presenter is being treated at Leeds General Infirmary
Top Gear's Richard Hammond is seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.
The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit.

A spokesman for the hospital said Mr Hammond was "stable".

Mr Hammond had been driving a rocket-powered dragster car capable of up to 300mph at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, Yorkshire.

Former firefighter Dave Ogden, who runs private firm Event Fire Services, was one of the first people at the scene of the crash.

He said: "We were down there with Top Gear who were filming him trying to break the British land speed record.

"On the previous run, the car had just gone over 300mph but I am not sure if it had broken the record.

"They had just done one more run and were planning to finish when it veered off to the right.

"One of the parachutes had deployed but it went on to the grass and spun over and over before coming to a rest about 100 yards from us."

He said his crew and an ambulance that was already on the airfield rushed over and found the car upside down and "dug in" to the grass.

Mr Ogden said he felt for a pulse and heard Mr Hammond breathing before the emergency crews worked together to turn the car the right way up and then cut him free.

He added: "He was regaining consciousness at that point and said he had some lower back pain. But he was drifting in and out of consciousness a little bit."

I wouldn't say that its all completely bad luck, people but themselves willingly into certain positions.

Obviously no one wishes this to happen to anyone, sometimes that old saying sh|t happens is true.

I too hope it is alright, seems like a pretty genuine guy.

it's been terrible lately. Brocky, then Peter Frere doing himself over in a civic type r and now the Hamster in a jetcar. nothing puts the whole 'motorsport is not playtime' theme in your head than all these guys getting banged up or worse. RIP Peter.

I just read this on another forum. Sad news but at least he is still kicking.

Funny guy Hammond, i wish him the best for his recovery. He is very lucky that at those speeds he survived.
