Hey. I was wondering at what point do you need to upgrade your alternator, get a second battery or add a capasitor?
At the moment Im running a pretty standard set up. Cd headunit 4 6"'s 500wrms response amp 12" clarion 300wrms I was just asking because when the engine is idling and a big boom of bass comes throught it sounds as if the engine idle drops very slightly. |

a cap will only help with a big bass note, then need time to charge, so a barage if bass notes and you will still run out of amps.
what car do you have, you might not have many options anyway.

You shouldn'r need either with 500RMS.
What size cable are you using for the amp and where are you earthing it?

The earth is in the bottom on the rightside behind the carpet somewhere. I didnt do most of the wiring it was done when i bought the car (power, Ground and RCA's). The cable size would be around the 600w? range. The smaller of the two wiring kits you can buy i think.
Ive seen plenty of cars with audio systems the same or bigger than mine without any changes to the alt. or addings capasitors. Ive seen they're lights diming a little but i just noticed the engine revs dropping a little when the car was idling. Its not allot i noticed because i was under the bonnet anyway. Car is an EF. |

I suggest trace the wires to point of origin and make sure they havent put like 0 guage at the amp to look good but it connects to a way smaller guage at the battery.

Might also pay to up the battery to motor earth from the standard one as well, and make a decent earth from battery to body.

Yeah the cables are the same the whole way, Connections are good. Ill Look into upgrading the grounds.
Also, im having problems with the car stalling occationaly. I think ive rulled out the sound system. But Im going to clean the ISC but i doubt that would have anything to do with the slight current drop. |

you hear what you think is a current drop, could be a struggling alt in need of rebuild run a multimeter on the battery and watch the voltage.

Will do, Ill get back to you on that. I might open it up and give the brushes a clean etc. Ive seen some people do it a few times (use to work in an auto elec. place for a couple weeks). If not a new one is about $130 i think.

i earthed my 700wrms amp to the battery - in my EF, had no such problems. using 4 guage wiring.

I'm assuming your running 8 gauge cable to your amp? If you are that should be fine for a setup like yours. It all depends on the load your amp is powering and how much current it is drawing from the battery/alternator. When you start powering multiple subs and running amps at low impedance loads like 1ohm, then you'll have to start looking at upgrading batteries etc.

my setup is: 2 x 12" subs 250wrms 4 ohm each
700wrms amp on 2 ohm load - 350wrms to each sub 4 guage (10mm) earthed to battery no problems. i think ur alternator may some attention or possibly a better quality battery.
