with mine (which overheats with to long on stall) i start to stall it up on the pedal brake just as the first amber comes on. hold it at about 1900 and let go on the last amber.

you should be able to stall earlier with power you have and not harm the auto.
holding any car on the stall frys the oil almost instantly.

with that in mind a couple of my faster times where done from idle.

try both ways and see what results you get.....

Stall it up and let her rip. You can let it go on the last amber if you want to try to cut the line as the light turns green, but first time out you can do what I do and take off in your own time and make sure you get it right. Try different stall rpm and see what gets the best 60'. Engines at our power levels are more forgiving with launch rpm than most.

Off the hand brake i find is a good method, if you dont go up in a shower of white smoke.

Is there more chance of anything breaking using the hand brake method?

I'm a newbie when it comes to the 1/4 mile, and also have an auto - want to try and make at least a half decent impression my first time out. hehe.

Break the handbrake itself maybe?

Really - different way of doing the same thing... except foot brake applies braking pressure to all 4 wheels, handbreak only applies braking force to rear wheels but does it a little differently.

Stalling it up on the foot brake would be much easier though.

I find if i stall my car up with full throttle and let the breaks off it takes off SLOWER then when i stall it up with half throttle and lift the breaks.....Could it be the torque reduction doing its thing?

Foot and the brake, foot on the acclerator, on the last amber off the brake. Stall up till you feel the back of the car move up. I was doing this on saturday with reaction time of .5 - .8 when .4 is perfect

What about traction loss when stalling it at 2200RPM

When i had the EF Fairmont before it was turbo'd, I ran my best time by getting it just off idle (800-900rpm) and stomp on it. Mods were 3.7 gears with a mini spool, extractors and exhaust, ran 15.6 @ 90mph

It all depends on traction and the tyres you have.It hooked up and took me to my new pb.After that I had trouble with traction. Was just lucky I think?

I cant stall any higher than about 1700rpm and then flash it to 3000rpm as I take off. Anything around 2000+rpm stall and then flash to 3000rpm just makes a LOT of smoke from the rear tyres.
High stalls are a whole new ballgame as far as stalling up is concerned.

What I found on the weekend was that by stalling the GT up it screeched the tyres big time and lost valuable sixty foot. All of the 2.0's and the 1.9 were done from idle and feathering it to a certain extent.

Basically you just need to get your technique right, flogging a street car out of the hole rarely achieves anything. Get that bit right and the rest will flow.
