XR5 vs MPS vs GTi vs WRX

In the market for a new car and am considering the above.
Will be organising test drives of all four but would throw it out there and ask has anyone had any experience with one or more of these cars and would share any info. All are around the same price (42 - 44K on road). All have their advantages and disadvantages and reviews are fairly helpful and mixed.

I would personally go the GTi. Don't hear many complaints, seem to be fairly quick, handle well, dealers are usually good with warrentee claims.

Went test driving with a mate last Friday... XR5 vs GTi. The XR5 felt like the quicker car but the GTi was more nicely finished off... The GTi felt less tinny than the XR5...My mate that was actually shopping for cars went for the GTi and he got a better deal with the GTi than the XR5... Wouldn't go for the WRX as any dealings I've had with Subaru I've been very disappointed and the WRX seems a bit fragile, not too mention ugly... Just my opinion

I've been considering all those cars too at some point, eventually I came to the conclusion if I was to get a hot hatch it would be the....

1st = MPS
2nd = GTi (lacks power)
3rd = ST/XR5 (No cruise control WTF !)
4th = WRX (last only because I've been there done that)

Out of those lot, the MPS for sure. But personally, I'd wait for the Ralliart Lancer. 195kW turbo with the AWD system from the EVO IX.

Should also consider the servicing costs and reliability of the VW. They aren't nearly as reliable as you may be led to believe and the spare parts / servicing costs can be pretty big.

Yeah, bought a Impreza RS about 3 months ago. Traded it in on my BA XR8 Ute so its been tough. Its a nice car but I miss having the car move when I put my foot on the accelerator. The GTi is a proven winner, no complaints there and it sells relatively cheap (base model).
The MPS is a raw performance hatch, too much power but never the less it will embarrass many other performance orientated cars.
The WRX is good, but a little soft now for what it is, not really in the league of the other two.
The XR5 is a kind of a dark horse, it isn't far behind the GTi, the downside is the lack of options Australia was given (Euro ST has everything from SAT NAV to Xenon globes). However it is cheaper than all of them, can get it on road for ~42k with leather.

I personally went for the XR5T, a great drive and a great looker. If I had the funds though it would have been between the GTi and the Mazda.

Have you considered the Megane Sport f1 model thing? Apparently it is a decent steerer. I don't mind the looks personally.

I love vw gti but they do hesitate which i dont like, Love the mps 6 not the 3's , I drive both at work everyday and yeah its hard to say .

I'd go the mazda only because i see so many vw on warranty.

The Focus
The Mondeo is a little more pricier and a little bigger then what I wanted. I'd probably go to the XR6T if I was thinking about to mondeo

I would go the Focus XR5T as the GTI has a very tight and smaller cabin as it enough for 4 adult without being squash up while the XR5T interior so big like a large Family size sedan and fits 5 adult comfty.

Focus is much more of a zippy car and has a far better styling. I can't understand why VW has use black plastic bumper which is a turnoff and look cheap even though 42k bit to much for a little hatch while the XR5T 36k price sound a bargian.

And the verdict is simple as Jeremy Clarkson (TopGear) would say "The Focus ST (XR5T) is the best performance small car there is on the market"

Nevermind, you better watch this before you make you mind up XR5 Turbo road test

ummmm not really, if you get the leather it is only a four seater, there is no fifth belt in the back and even if there was it would be a tight squeeze.
The cloth seats make no difference, it wasn't made for 5 people.

36k is starting price, ends up being 40k on road. GTi starts at 39k

i wouldn't believe everything he says, every week the car he drives is the best one he has ever driven.

Only thing to do is go for a test drive in them all and make up your own mind.

Also the HSV Astra is one to look at as well.

Driven all except the XR5, only been in that... and here's how I'd rate them...

#1. Golf GTI
#2. Focus XR5 Turbo
#3. 3 MPS
#4. Impreza WRX

After working at a Subaru/Mazda dealership... all I have to say is Subaru ney, Mazda yay.

VW is overrated and not that reliable, plus Golf VI is coming out early next year. There is no point getting an outgoing Golf V GTi. 3 MPS is very nice and the styling has grown on me.

VW is not that reliable?

MkVI won't make it here until 09/10 so its quite a safe investment. And even then, they hold their value very well - look at Golf IV GTI prices.

Overrated and not that reliable... what a laugh!

The VW is easily outpaced by the competition. Perhaps that's why it's overrated as a performance car?

You're the guy who reckons Toyotas and Subarus are unreliable. I find that even more of a laugh.

They are unreliable. Through real life experience too. Working at a Scooby shop would help.

Its not outpaced by the competition. In fact, the only ones on that list capable of keeping up with a DSG GTI are the WRX and the MPS3. The XR5 trails them considerably.

Subaru = unreliable? Based on the experiences/opinions of a biased service department employee?

Yes, you're correct. The MPS 3, Megane 225, WRX all considerably outpace the VW when it comes to in gear acceleration and the 1/4 mile. The VW is a good all rounder but is too slow and arguably too soft to be a serious performance car.

Mazda 3 is also quite old actually, wait for Lancer Ralliart if you can or spend a few more grand on a Mondeo ST/XR5. Btw, I see more Golf GTi than Falcon XR6s these days...
